Catholic War Veterans plan soup sale

The Catholic War Veterans will hold its annual soup sale, “Soup-er Sunday,” from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 1, at 290 Valley Ave., Altoona.

All proceeds will benefit Families United For Change.

There will be quarts to-go. Choose from a large variety of soups, served with a roll.

Eat-in options from the kitchen will be available to purchase and eat in.

There also will be basket raffles, baked goods and more.

The mission of Families United For Change is to increase awareness, provide resources and erase stigma surrounding Substance Use Disorders (SUDs).

Homers Gap Civics set hamloaf dinner

Homers Gap Civic Association, 135 Preston Lane, will hold a hamloaf dinner from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21. Cost is $12, which includes hamloaf, AuGratin potatoes, corn, kaiser roll and butter and a cupcake.

Historian of Year nominations sought

The Bedford County Historical Society is seeking nominations for “Historian of the Year” for 2025.

The nominee must not have previously been given the award and must be a resident, group or citizen of Bedford County or a society member.

The nominee must have completed in the past year an item or project involving the history of Bedford County through research, restoration, writing, collection, preservation, etc. This may be cumulative work over a period of years, but it needs to have been accomplished in the past year.

The nominee must not have been financially compensated for their project or have been employed by someone or by an organization to accomplish their project.

The deadline for nominations is March 2. The award will be presented at the society’s annual historical society banquet in April.

Winter Lecture Series begins Jan. 31

The Bedford County Historical Society announced its annual Winter Lecture Series. All programs will be held at 2 p.m. Saturdays at 6441 Lincoln Highway (lower level), Bedford. The January and February schedule is as follows:

Jan. 31 — Landon Defibaugh will present “The History of Fort Bedford Museum and its Artifacts.”

Feb. 21 — Lawrence Knorr, PhD., will present “The History of Greater Cumberland and the Formation of Bedford County.”

Feb. 28 — Phil Brambley will present “Water Power.”

These events are free and open to the public. In the event of a forecast of inclement weather, call the Bedford County Historical Society at 814-623-2011 on Friday, prior to the event.

Valentine dinner-dance is Feb. 14

The Alum Bank Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary will host a Valentine’s Day Dinner & Dance on Saturday, Feb. 14, at the firehall.

Dinner is $15 per couple, which includes spaghetti and meatballs, tossed salad and a bread stick. The kitchen opens at 5 p.m. Music will be by Earth Angels from 6:30 to 10 p.m. Dance admission is $5.

Mardi Gras dance set for Feb. 13

The Indiana Ballroom Dance Club invites community members to celebrate Mardi Gras on Feb 13 at the Indiana Elks Lodge

Enjoy dancing to the sounds of Murphys Big Little Band from 7 to 10 p.m. for $15 per person.

Puzzle Derby to be held Feb. 27

The Alexandria Memorial Public Library will host a Puzzle Derby at 6 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, at Alexandria Fire Hall, 302 Hartslog St.

Teams of up to four adults (age 16+) are invited to join us for a jig-saw puzzle competition as a fundraiser for the ongoing program and building needs of the library.

The evening will be filled with friendly competition, prizes, finger-foods and fun for a team registration fee of $40. Space is limited so please register online on the library Facebook page or in person by Feb. 15. Call 814-669-4313 for more details or to make a reservation.

Centre Ballroom to hold dance Feb. 8

Centre Ballroom will sponsor a dance from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at Lambert Hall, Bellefonte.

Cost is $10 per person. Please take a snack to share.

DAR adopts veterans for the holidays

The Adam Holliday Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution met Dec. 20 at the Hollidaysburg Area Public Library Community Room.

The chapter adopted three veterans and their families for the 2025 Christmas season through the Van Zandt VA Medical Center.

Chapter members participated in Wreaths Across America at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Martinsburg on Dec. 13th!

The chapter members donated new coats, hats, gloves, scarves and snowsuits for United Way of Blair County’s Toasty Toddler Program.

Any woman at least 18 years of age who can prove lineal descent to a patriot who served in the Revolutionary War or gave aid to American Colonists is eligible for DAR membership.
