Hollidaysburg library sets Oct. activities

The Hollidaysburg Area Public Library has announced its activities for October.

n Canasta and Mah Jongg games are held at 11 a.m. Mondays. Beginners are welcome.

n Maker Mondays are held all day Mondays in the Children’s Room. A station will be set up with a different craft, challenge or activity each week.

n Storytime and Craft will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Fridays. Children must be accompanied by a caregiver. Special StoryTimes this month: AJ Kurtz, education coordinator at IRC, will teach about the environment, recycling and composting on Oct. 7 and 10. Halloween Trick or Treat StoryTime in the Library will be held Oct. 31; costumes are optional.

n Needlework & Arts Group is held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Bring your own materials and projects for this crafting club intended for adults.

n Twisted Stitchers meet from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays. Bring your own project, yarn and hooks; spend time with other crafters.

n Dance, Sing and Play! will take place at 10:30 a.m. Thursdays, Oct. 9, 16, 23 and 30. Oct. 30 is a Trick or Treat Dance, Sing and Play; costumes are optional.

n Lego Club will meet from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Fridays. Bring your imagination, and the library will supply the Legos. The program is intended for school-aged children.

n Language in the Library will be held from 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Mondays, Oct. 6, 13, 20 and 27 and Nov. 3 and 10. This program is intended for children kindergarten through sixth grade and is taught by Hollidaysburg Area High School language teachers and members of the Language Clubs. This fun language learning program returns with a twist: Spanish, German and French will each be featured in a six-week session.

n Paws to Read will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 4. Meet and read to pets from the Central PA Humane Society. Children ages 5 and older are welcome with their caregivers.

n The Friends of the Library will hold a used book saleOct. 8, 9 and 10 at the library. The preview sale for members of the Friends will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7. Wednesday and Thursday sale hours will be 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday sale hours are 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. A $5-a-bag day will begin Thursday evening at 5 p.m. and run through Friday. Please note: No book donations will be accepted after Sept. 28. The library will begin accepting book donations again on Oct. 19.

n Penn State Extension Master Gardeners of Blair County will present a series of free in-person workshops at 6 p.m. Oct. 14, 21 and 28 in the library’s Community Room. Discover how to raise bees, teas and trees; learn the basics in three separate workshops. Register at

n The Altoona/Blair County Photo Society (ABCPS) will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20. The Photo Society gathers to discuss a variety of topics, including taking and editing pictures. Learn something new with any type of camera or smart phone. New members are welcome. Call 814-207-1479 with questions.

n The Inspirational Book Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9. This month’s book selection is “The Color of Your Skin Ain’t the Color of Your Heart” by Michael Phillips.

n The Women Writers Book Club will meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15. This month’s book is “The Haunting of Hill House” by Shirley Jackson.

n The Best of Times Book Club will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, to discuss “God of the Woods” by Liz Moore. All are welcome.
