Car show planned Aug. 31 in Patton

PATTON — A car show and community event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 31, at Patton Park.

Sponsored by the Patton Fire Company No. 1, the day will feature cars, trucks and motorbikes in the cruise-in which will be a judged event with trophies and dash plaques awarded.

Family fun includes music by DJ Wild Willie, food, games and more. The swimming pool opens at noon if weather permits.

A basket auction to benefit the Patton Park will also take place. Winners will be drawn at 4 p.m.

Family Hospice offers grief support

Family Hospice, Part of UPMC, is offering free grief support sessions at Trinity Lutheran Church, 408 N. Sixth St. (Juniata), Altoona.

Groups will meet from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesdays from Sept. 3 to Oct. 8.

Family Hospice Bereavement Coordinator Jennifer Cox is facilitating this group for attendees to share their feelings with others who are grieving.

Attendees should use the doors to community hall (side entrance near alley).

Space is limited. Registration is required by Sept. 2.

Penn Association changes meeting

The William Penn Association, Branch 800, Altoona, will meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at the Blair Tower Community Room, 1600 Eighth Ave., Altoona. This is a change of day and location. All adult members are welcome.

The WPA is a fraternal organization with headquarters in Pittsburgh and branches throughout the United States.

Blair Garden Club to meet Aug. 25

The Blair Garden Club will meet at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 25, at the American Legion Post 516 Social Hall, 1501 N. Juniata St., Hollidaysburg.

Billie Egan, director of Big Brothers Big Sisters, will discuss how the program used the Grant Initiative money received earlier this year to build raised vegetable beds and to teach young children about growing vegetables.

Attendees also will participate in a craft project, painting stones to place in their gardens. All supplies will be provided by the club.

Claysburg Farm Show to begin Sept. 2

The 94th Claysburg Farm Show will be held Sept. 2-6 at the former Queen grade school building in Queen.

It will include the apple pie, angel food cake, chocolate cake and junior cookies, brownies or bars contests.

The rules of the contests are in the back of the premium book.

This year a patriotic apron contest is added to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States next year. The aprons must be made with red, white and blue materials ONLY. The rules are in Department 22.

The Department of Agriculture has cancelled any egg entries again this year. Also, feathers are not permitted in any craft item. This is due to disease that is widespread.

Premium books are available at the Claysburg Library, Post Office and other local businesses.

Bring your items to exhibit between 2 and 9 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, and pick them up after 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6.

Carve Away Hunger seeks vendors

The Mainline Trailblazers Troop 814 will sponsor the second annual Carve Away Hunger Family Event from 3 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, at Cresson Township Veterans Park.

The event is being held to raise awareness of hunger and will include a scavenger hunt, pumpkin carving contest, games, basket raffle, vendors and more.

Nonperishable items will be collected for the two local food pantries. The event is free to attend.

Organizers are looking for vendors to participate in this event. There is no vendor fee, but organizers are asking for donations for the basket raffle.

Drop-offs accepted for YMCA yard sale

HOLLIDAYSBURG — The Blair Regional YMCA is accepting donations for its annual yard sale, which will take place from Sept. 18-20.

Drop-off dates are as follows:

Noon to 2 p.m. Aug. 18; 9 to 11 a.m. Aug. 20; 8 to 10 a.m. Aug. 23; 8 to 11 a.m. Aug. 26; 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 28; 9 a.m. to noon Sept. 3; 8 to 11 a.m. Sept. 5; 7 to 11 a.m. Sept. 9; 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 11; 8 to 10 a.m. Sept. 13; 3 to 5 p.m. Sept. 15; and 8 to 11 a.m. Sept. 16.

Items not being accepted are clothing, tube TVs, incomplete or non-working electronics, shoes, magazines, paperback books and stuffed animals.

Early bird entry will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, with a $10 entry fee. Free entry will be from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, and 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20.

Jenny’s Fight Night to aid cancer patient

Jenny’s Fight Night will be held from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 6, at Levity Brewing in Altoona.

Jenny’s Fight Night is a high-energy evening packed with music bingo, silent auctions, door prizes, games and giveaways — all to support Jenny Harkins, who’s currently taking on cancer for the third time.

$1 from every beer will be donated to Jenny’s medical fund, and all attendees will be entered to win door prizes just for joining in.
