PASR to meet July 1 at Marzoni’s

The Blair County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees meets at 11:30 a.m. on the first Tuesday of every month.

The July 1 meeting will be held at Marzoni’s in Duncansville. It is a self-pay lunch. The nonprofit for which the group will be collecting donations is the Stuff the Bus Campaign of the Family Resource Center. Requested items are school supplies or cash.

The group welcomes new members who have been employed by local school districts or Intermediate Units and are now retired.

Library to host shredding, art camp

Burgmeier Hauling will bring a shredding truck to the Bellwood-Antis Public Library from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, June 30. Residents can get a maximum of four document boxes per person shredded for free.

The Write Stuff Cursive Art Camp teaches kids ages 8-12 cursive handwriting fundamentals via fun art activities: in five days, kids learn the entire upper case and lower case cursive alphabet.

AFSCME Retirees to meet July 2

AFSCME sub-chapter 8306 retirees meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. July 2 at the Union Hall on Patch Way Road, Duncansville. Please arrive by 1:15 p.m.

The board will meet at 12:30 p.m.

Please remember donations for the Dorothy Day Center and the new project that members will be working on. Nomination and election of officers will be held.

Teen seeks pictures of Horseshoe Curve

Teen Author Kevin J. Stiver is currently working on a pictorial history of the Horseshoe Curve book and is looking for pictures from personal collections.

Ballroom group looking for dancers

Republican committee elects leaders

The Blair County Republican Committee, on June 19, elected the following local Republicans to leadership roles: Matt Zupon, chairman; Deb Weston, vice chair, Region 1; Cheryl Rupp, vice chair, Region 2; Jacob Wible, vice chair, Region 3; and Kathy Gassler, vice chair, Region 4.

The committee acknowledged outgoing chairman Jim Foreman for his momentous and inspirational leadership.

NARVRE cancels meeting for July

The July meeting of NARVRE Unit No. 173 has been cancelled due to the July 4th holiday.

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 6, at Prime Sirloin Buffet, Duncansville.

Chess championship invites players

The 2025 Altoona City Chess Championship tournament will be held July 10 to Aug. 17. Games may be played during the Altoona Chess Club meeting, Thursdays at the Altoona Area Public Library from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. (or at other times during the week anytime before the next round).

The championship is open to all — no USCF membership is required. There is a $15 entrance fee with all funds going toward prizes.

Swinging Squares plans summer dances

The Swinging Squares Square and Round Dance Club has announced its summer schedule.

July 31 — Demonstration at Graystone Manor in Bellwood (7 to 8 p.m.).

Civil War Round Table to meet July 1

The Central PA Civil War Round Table will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, in the Activities Room of the South Hills School of Business and Technology, 480 Waupelani Drive, State College.

Cory Pfarr will speak on “To Make a Demonstration, to the Letter”: Seven Distinct Maps of Longstreet’s Gettysburg Performance.” With the annual Battle of Gettysburg re-enactment coming up July 4-6, Pfarr’s program is very timely.

Pfarr works for the Department of Defense. He is the author of the award-winning “Longstreet at Gettysburg: A Critical Reassessment” (McFarland Publishers, 2019), “Righting the Longstreet Record at Gettysburg: Six Matters of Controversy and Confusion” (McFarland Publishers, 2023), and a forthcoming book under contract with McFarland on the Federal Signal Service’s actions at Antietam.

Pfarr is an associate editor for North & South Magazine, contributor to North & South Magazine and Gettysburg Magazine, and has appeared on Pennsylvania Cable Network and C-SPAN American History TV. He lives in Fallston, Maryland, with his wife and three kids.
