Yesteryear-1956 Roaring Spring High School football coaches

Victor L. Curfman of Altoona, formerly of Roaring Spring, submitted this photo of the 1956 Roaring Spring High School football coaches. Shown are (from left): James Hummel, Edward Black, Head Coach Joseph Conlon, Max Baker and Dean McGee. Hummel also served as track coach and was the first head football coach of Central High School and later became principal. Black also served as the baseball coach. Conlon, a World War II POW, was also a basketball coach and later served as an assistant principal. Baker was a former baseball coach and basketball coach leading Roaring Spring to District titles in 1948 and 1952 and runner-up finishes in 1949, 1951 and 1953, he later became Central High School principal. McGee became Northern Bedford’s football coach in 1958 and served eight years and then became Bedford football coach in 1966 and served for 24 years. He won 207 games in his 32 years. He is a member of the Bedford County Sports Hall of Fame.
