Altoona Area Public Library sets programs for May

The Altoona Area Public Library, 1600 Fifth Ave., Altoona, has announced the following programs for the month of May:

— Chess Club — 4:30-7:30 p.m. Thursdays — All are welcome to come in on Thursday nights to play chess. Meet at the rear tables on the first floor. No registration necessary. Anyone under the age of 16 needs to be accompanied by their legal guardian.

— Calling all teen gamers! In partnership with the Video Game Clubs of America, the library is hosting a gaming club from 3-5 p.m. on Tuesdays on May 6, 13, 20, 27. From tabletop board games, card games, Nintendo Switch and more, each week will be something different for you to enjoy with your friends. Call 814-946-0417 ext 125 to register.

— Sample Food through the Ages at 6 p.m. May 6 in the library board room! Experience a historical presentation on our food topic for the month. Samples and recipes will be given out at the end of the program for all to enjoy! This month’s topic is Pennsylvania Food History with pot pie and shoefly pie. — Homeschool Hub: Biological Building Blocks — 1 p.m. May 8 — Join us for a microscopic journey into living things as we learn about DNA. Explore how these little helixes are used to build plants, animals and even us. Try your hand at extracting some DNA on your own! Call 814-946-0417 ext. 123 to register. This is a program for school age children.

— Friends of the Library are holding a Game Night from 6-7:30 p.m. May 8 in the Library board room. No registration is required. Ages 12+

— LEGO CLUBS, at 6 p.m. May 8 and May 12 — All you need is your imagination! Unleash your creativity with LEGO club! This program is geared towards children ages 4 and up. Monthly registration and a library card is required. Call 814-946-0417 ext. 123 to sign up.

— Teens are invited to join us after school from 3-4 p.m. May 8 to make DnD Mimic Boxes. Watch out for these cute and creepy critters! Looks can be very deceiving when creating these one of a kind creatures! Use your skills to create fun and frightful little monsters. All materials are provided. Call 946-0417 ext 125 to register.

— Super Saturday: Barbie and Ken — 1-3 p.m. May 10 — Calling all Barbies and Kens ages three and up! Grab your favorite Barbie and Ken dolls and join us for an unforgettable Super Saturday packed with fun and creativity. Call 946-0417 ext 123 to register.

— PAWS for Reading: 5-6 p.m. May 12 — This heartwarming program partners the library’s youth room with the local humane society to create a paw-some reading adventure. Kids practice reading aloud to furry friends, boosting their confidence and literacy skills while giving adoptable pets some much-needed love and attention. It’s a tail-wagging, page-turning experience for everyone involved! Registration is required. Call 946-0417 ext 123 to register.

— Make your own Wooden Block Lantern at 6 p.m. May 12 in the library. Discover how wood Jenga-style blocks can be used for craft projects. During this program we will be using the blocks to create a decorative lantern. All materials are provided. Registration is required. This is an adult only program. — Wooden Bookmarks: 3 p.m. May 15 — Teens are invited afterschool to make their own wooden bookmarks. Call 946-0417 ext 125 to register.

— Focused on Foundations — 9:30 a.m. May 16. This FREE Developmental Playgroup is designed to help parents and their children 3 & under work together to meet the child’s developmental goals. The playgroup is facilitated by an early childhood specialist and designed to provide fun activities to promote each child’s language, problem-solving, motor skills, and social interactions. — The Friends of the Library will be hosting their monthly book club at 10 a.m. May 17 in the library theater. The book for the month is Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card. Please RSVP by email to SarahAAPL@yahoo.com. If you are not yet a Friends member, forms can be found on the library website. Memberships are $10/year.

— AAPL Shelf Indulgence Adult Book Club will be held at 10 a.m. May 17. This is a BYOM (bring your own mug) with a choice of coffee or tea. The book for this month is The Only One Left by Riley Sager. Register by calling 946-0417 ext 125.

— Crafternoon: Flower Crowns — 2 p.m. May 17 — Those April showers have brought us May flowers! All materials will be provided to construct your very own faux flower crown. These flowers never wilt and can be enjoyed all year long! This is a program for adult patrons. Call 946-0417 ext 125 to register.

— Marvelous Machines: Master Mousetraps — 3:30 p.m. May 19 — Grades 2-5: Join us every month for this STEM program as we explore a different simple machine and the many ways we use them in our daily lives. Up this month, having mastered the six classical simple machines, try your hand at combining them together in complex mousetraps and other compound machines! Will your machines end up the big cheese, or will the rodents run wild? Call 814-946-0417 ext. 123 to register.

— Super Silly Stories: Preschoolers and caregivers are invited to enjoy some “Super Silly Stories” at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. May 22 at the library. This program is free and registration is required. Call 814-946-0417 ext 123 to register.

— Do you need personalized assistance getting started with your genealogy research? The library will be offering 30 minute Genealogy 1-on-1 appointments to help you get started using our digital resources and advice on how to stay organized and uncover your family history. Learn how to set up your accounts and begin a family tree. Call to reserve a time by calling 814-946-0417 ext 161.

— Story Times: Families of young children are invited to check out the Altoona Area Public Library’s free educational story time programs for caregiver and child to enjoy together! Developmentally appropriate and enjoyable programs for children ages 1-6 are offered weekly. Please call the library at 814-946-0417 ext. 123 to register.

— Mother Goose (Ages 12-24 Months): 9:30 a.m. May 12 and 9:30 a.m. Thursdays, May 8 and 15.

— Toddler Time (Ages 2-3): 9:30 a.m. May 6 and 13 or at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. May 7 and 14.

— Preschool Explorers (ages 3-6): 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays, May 6 and 13 and at 10:30 a.m. Thursdays, May 8 and 15.
