John C. Monti, director of music for the Altoona Area School District and a teacher with 39 years of service, announced his retirement to the school board as of Aug. 31.

25 years ago: 1998

The Meadows Family Fun Center, Hollidaysburg, was featuring an Altoona Corvette Club show that weekend, Butch Damico spokesman.

10 years ago: 2013

The Blair County commissioners leased the former Frank’s Restaurant at 1414 4th St. for $1,721 a month to house the Blair County coroner’s office, which was moving from the Valley View Home. Before Valley View, it was in the 911 Center.

— In 1925, jury selection took place in Dayton, Tennessee, in the trial of John T. Scopes, charged with violating the law by teaching Darwin’s Theory of Evolution. (Scopes was convicted and fined, but the verdict was overturned on a technicality.)

— In 1929, American paper currency was reduced in size as the government began issuing bills that were approximately 25% smaller.

— In 1951, armistice talks aimed at ending the Korean War began at Kaesong.
