Blair Honor Guard seeks volunteers
The Blair County Veterans Honor Guard is seeking honorably discharged veterans and/or active duty military personnel to join its ranks.
The group provides Military Honors for fallen comrades in Blair County. Since 2008, it has rendered and/or assisted the military with approximately 2,000 burial honors.
The Blair County Honor Guard is a volunteer, nonprofit organization and provides all training, equipment and uniforms.
Whether you are retired or working full time, the Guard asks you to consider the call to serve once more and assist with the honor of laying fellow comrades to their eternal rest.

Horseshoe Seniors to hold dinner-dance
The Horseshoe Seniors Dinner Dance will be held Aug. 18 at the Bavarian Hall, 112 S. 13th St., Altoona.
Dinner is at 5:30 p.m., followed by three hours of dancing to music played by a DJ. Admission is $13 each. Singles and couples are welcome.
This is a fun evening for seniors, and new people are encouraged to come out and enjoy a time of friendship, entertainment and companionship with others. This dinner-dance has been a monthly event and will usually be held the third Wednesday of every month.

PARSE holds luncheon and meeting
The Pennsylvania Association of Retired State Employees Blair, Bedford, Huntingdon Chapter 1-10 held a meeting and buffet-style luncheon July 20 at the American Legion Social Hall, Hollidaysburg.
Richard Brantner, mayor of Martinsburg, presented “The Assassination of John F. Kennedy.” Brantner has a background in law enforcement. He has made several trips to Dallas and met individuals who were involved in the assassination investigation. Based on evidence, the mayor is of the opinion that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone and that there was no conspiracy.
The state PARSE meeting will take place Sept. 13 to 15 in Gettysburg. Sharon Dell, president, and James Dell, secretary, are chapter delegates. Lou Gresik, vice president, is the alternate delegate.
The next chapter meeting is scheduled for Sept. 21 when officers for the coming year will be elected. Members are asked to take an unwrapped toy for the Toys for Tots donation. More information will be sent to members prior to the meeting.

Relay For Life team plans run/walk
The Blair Relay For Life team, Jonezin’ for a Cure, will hold its Lace Up For Life 5k Run/Walk Sept. 2 at Canoe Creek State Park, Hollidaysburg. Meet at Pavillion No. 2.

Early registration (by Aug. 19) is $20 per person (includes a T-shirt) and regular registration (after Aug. 19) is $25 per person (T-shirt is not guaranteed).

Started in 2016, Jonezin’ for a Cure is a Relay For Life team that consists of family and close friends working together to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Funds raised through Relay For Life go directly to the American Cancer Society to help fund research for a cure, various programs for battling cancer, as well as education programs to reduce cancer risk.
Bedford Relay team plans basket raffle
The WoodmenLife Chapter 688 Relay For Life Team will hold a basket raffle on Aug. 22 at the Bedford American Legion Post 113.
The doors will open at 1 p.m., and drawings will start at 2 P.m.
The $20 ticket includes a door prize ticket and 25 individual tickets for the baskets. baskets are valued at $40 or more, with many donations from local businesses, golf courses, parks and restaurants in Bedford and Blair counties.
Tickets can be purchased at the door. The team also will raffle off two gift card trees, each valued at $200 and a 50/50 drawing. There will be snacks and refreshments.
Bike-race registration is underway
MILTON — Registration has started for the annual Milton Harvest Festival 28-mile bike race set for Sept. 11.
The annual event, a project of the Milton Rotary Club, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 11.
The course winds throughout farm land east of the borough. Proceeds from the race go to support the harvest festival. The first 120 participants receive a T-shirt.
Race day registration, which costs $25 if registered by Sept. 1 (online and preregister) and $38 on race day, will be held from 8 to 9 a.m. at the Milton Municipal Building, 2 Filbert St.

Blair Garden Club awards $750 initiative
The Blair Garden Club Gardening Initiative Program for 2021 was awarded to the Roaring Spring Community Library.
The grant was for $750 and will allow the library to create a community library garden. The library garden will be an outdoor area where individuals propagate vegetables and herbs for personal and public consumption.
It will also serve as a space for creativity, a place of inspiration and a tool for community empowerment. By making this a multi-use space, community members and service organizations will be able to enjoy a wide variety of activities.
It will create a space where all ages can take part in learning about gardening, environmental sustainability while creating a stronger connection to the community.
