Return of The Lampshades and Other “Winter Noise” This Weekend!

Here is a listing of Altoona area live music happenings for the weekend and week of Friday, December 2 through Thursday, December 8.

Among the highlights of live music in the Altoona area during the next seven days is the return of indie-rockers The Lampshades to the Altoona area. They will headline a three-band bill at McGarvey’s on Friday night, which also includes the bands Float and UFO Crash Site. The Lampshades first formed as a teenage trio in the Altoona area in 2003, and played the all-ages circuit until 2009, when collegiate endeavors separated the group. The current edition of The Lampshades – singer/guitarist Jaren Love, bassist Chris Kibler and drummer Dane Adelman – returned to action in 2012, and are now based in the Pittsburgh area. The group’s McGarvey’s appearance will be their first Altoona show since 2009.

Fans of the harder and more agitated side of the rock spectrum can experience some “Winter Noise” on Saturday evening at The Anvil, 130 6th Avenue in Altoona. Starting at 7 p.m., “Winter Noise” will feature performances from seven different local and regional hard-hitting rock bands: Seas We Fear to Sail, Fyre, E.N.D., Vitruvia, Long Drags, NLS and Into the Storm. This show will mark the first Altoona appearance by Reading-based rock group Vitruvia, whose drummer is Altoona’s Matt Bidoli, who joined the group last winter.

And Grammy-nominated musician Alex Meixner will provide the musical entertainment during the sold-out “Kringlefest” event on Friday night at Altoona’s Unter Uns Musical & Entertainment Society. Based in Allentown, Meixner started out as a pianist and accordion player, but has expanded his repertoire to include drums, bass, and his main instrument these days, trumpet. His musical world includes polka, ethnic folk, jazz, pop and more. Meixner’s “Polka Freak Out” CD with Bubba Hernandez earned a Grammy Award nomination in 2007.

Check out and support the area live music! And if you celebrate heavily while doing so, please designate a sober driver or call a taxi to get you home.
