Carnival glass ice cream dish features Peacock, Urn pattern

Antiques & Collecting: Terry and Kim Kovel Ice cream and carnivals are two of summer’s best treats, but, for glass collectors, they are a delight any time of the year. Ice cream bowls are a favorite type of carnival glass; their size and shape make them an excellent showcase for the rich colors, pressed patterns, and iridescence. A nine-inch carnival glass ice cream bowl by Northwood, depicting the Peacock and Urn pattern in a vibrant amethyst purple, sold for $130 at Strawser Auction Group. Carnival glass was made in the early 20th century as an inexpensive version of Tiffany ...

Stocks waver on Wall Street while crude oil prices drop

NEW YORK — Stocks drifted to a mixed finish on Wall Street Friday as oil prices slipped for the first time in a week. Every major index lost ground overall for the week amid increasing pressure from a sharp escalation in the U.S. war with Iran. Investors are also contending with new tariffs from the Trump administration and worries about the economy suffering under the weight of stubborn inflation. The S&P 500 barely budged in a day of uneventful trading. It rose 3.68 points, or less than 0.1%, to 7,411.98. The index notched its second consecutive losing week, which hasn’t ...

My eye-opening visit to the data center

Last week I took a daylong field trip touring a giant data center near Dulles International Airport in Loudon County, Virginia. The facility is owned and operated by CloudHQ. A “cloud,” by the way, is the hardware that stores trillions of data files, research, love letters, the entirety of the Library of Congress and virtually everything else ever written, invented or retrievable online. The cloud is synonymous with “data center.” Many people don’t realize that without these massive data centers — that have somehow been demonized by everyone across the political ...

How one boy brought neighbors together

Many people across the nation were touched by the heartwarming story of Roman Butzlaff, a 4-year-old boy in Concord, North Carolina, who befriended several of his elderly neighbors and became their adopted grandson. When the CBS Evening News aired its July 10 “On the Road” feature on Roman, I was amazed at his genuine desire to connect with individuals decades older. I’m sure others found this odd at first, as Roman was spending his mornings saying “hey” to everyone walking by his home instead of being immersed in a video game. Many children his age would have ignored the ...

Paramount delays Warner buyout

Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery have agreed to delay closing their $81 billion merger well into next year, a stunning move that arrives as a judge continues to consider a challenge from 12 states seeking to block the deal altogether. Paramount said in a filing Friday that it won’t close its Warner buyout until either a court ruling is made on the states’ claims or June 1, 2027. The agreement comes just days after U.S. District Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin granted a temporary restraining order to freeze the transaction for weeks, noting that the states had raised some ...
