Maintain a smart watch on jail tech

Every jail has challenges when dealing with people who have serious medical needs. People who have been arrested can have the same health problems anyone might face. They may have cardiac or respiratory conditions. They may be diabetic. They may be in the throes of an active incident that is material to their legal problems, like drug and alcohol use. The National Association of Counties reports about 40% of inmates have some kind of medical condition. That figure does not include the 60% with mental health issues and up to 75% with addiction. Jails, as they take custody of these ...

History full of people who let ego soar

We are born with an ego — from a baby’s first cry to our death. Most can control their ego, protecting themselves and others from harm. Some give it free reign, causing the fallout to be substantial. History is full of people who let their ego get the best of them. Dr. Anthony Fauci, who rose to international fame during the Covid-19 pandemic, fed his ego, causing great harm to others. Thanks to Kentucky Republican Senator Rand Paul, we can now read the diary Dr. Fauci compiled during that stressful and deadly period. Through more than 1,000 pages, Dr. Fauci, who then headed ...

War eating Trump’s presidency

An Iran war that was supposed to be brief, and then was supposed to be over, is imposing an increasing price on Donald Trump’s presidency. We’ve seen a second term of a Republican administration go this way before. There are distinct echoes of George W. Bush’s Iraq War — the conflict that Trump has long excoriated — in the president’s predicament. Now, the Iran war is different from Iraq. There is no ground invasion, no regime change, no occupation, no counterinsurgency. The casualties aren’t close to the same scale, and Donald Trump has been fighting Iran for months, ...

New app screens your phone calls

Hints from Heloise Dear Heloise: I make calls for work concerning client requests, and some numbers now have an app that screens all calls. This starts after waiting for the voicemail. You have to give a name, a reason for the call, or a phone number, then wait some more while a list is checked. Then, if you’re on the list, it goes to voicemail. None of this is efficient, as it wastes my time and also ties up your phone. The person can see who’s calling, and they don’t have to answer. Not all calls are spam. This isn’t respectful to people you’ve given your number to. –– ...

Worner created dioramas inside bottles that depicted saloons

Antiques & Collecting By Terry and Kim Kovel Very little is known about folk artist Carl Worner, and much of what is known comes from his art. He lived from about 1860 to 1930 and, during his lifetime, made more than 100 carved and painted wooden dioramas inside glass bottles. He is said to have asked for empty bottles and cigar boxes at saloons to gather his materials, turning trash into treasure. His best-known and often best-selling works are saloon scenes. One example sold for $1,950 at World Auction Gallery, well over its high estimate of $800. These bottles follow similar ...

PaGE conference well worth last-minute registration

Roots & Branches By Jim Beidler It’s not too often — OK, well this is the first time! — that I’ve been able to give a “review” of a conference before the dates of that conference. This is the case because normally how are you going to review something that hasn’t happened, right? Well, I’m able to that with PaGE 2026 — Pennsylvania’s Genealogy Event — because in what I consider a genius move, the all-virtual conference had the speakers for its main sessions pre-record their presentations and made them available for viewing starting July 20, so I’ve been ...
