Running backs (Seventh in a series of Penn State position previews.) Returning starters: Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen were an incredible tandem as true freshmen, combining for nearly 2,000 yards rushing and 24 touchdowns. Singleton went for 1,061 yards and Allen 867. Allen also caught 20 passes, Singleton 11. Key losses: There really aren’t any. Keyvone Lee (25-94) was used in only five games, saw the writing on the wall and transferred to Mississippi State. Ditto Devon Ford, who landed at Notre Dame. Lions trio gets on new list UNIVERSITY PARK – Penn State sophomore linebacker Abdul Carter, junior offensive lineman Olumuyiwa Fashanu and junior defensive end Chop Robinson were named to the Lombardi Award watch list on Tuesday. The Lombardi Award is presented annually to the college football offensive or defensive lineman who exemplifies the character and discipline of NFL Hall of Fame head coach Vince Lombardi in addition to outstanding performance and ability. The award qualifications also include linebackers who line up within five yards of the line of scrimmage.

Linebackers (Sixth in a series of Penn State position previews.) Returning starters: All three LBs are back in Abdul Carter, Curtis Jacobs, and Tyler Elsdon. Much like a lot of the defense, there is a lot of experience, and partly why the defense is so highly regarded in the preseason. Key losses: Jonathan Sutherland and Charlie Katshir both graduated, but Sutherland spent most of his career as a safety. Katshir appeared in just six games last year. Otherwise, everyone is back. Keep an eye on: Kobe King appeared in every game last season as a redshirt freshman and made 41 tackles. ...

The Buckeyes have appeared in 70 of the 74 preseason rankings that date to 1950, more than any other school. Returning starters: Kalen King emerged as one of the better corners in the country, playing opposite Joey Porter Jr., but Johnny Dixon also made six starts, giving the Lions an experienced tandem. State College native Keaton Ellis started every game at safety. Key losses: Porter held down one side and wasn’t targeted much. He’ll likely start for the Steelers, who took him in the second round.
