Running backs
(Seventh in a series of Penn State position previews.)
Returning starters: Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen were an incredible tandem as true freshmen, combining for nearly 2,000 yards rushing and 24 touchdowns. Singleton went for 1,061 yards and Allen 867. Allen also caught 20 passes, Singleton 11.
Key losses: There really aren't any. Keyvone Lee (25-94) was used in only five games, saw the writing on the wall and transferred to Mississippi State. Ditto Devon Ford, who landed at Notre Dame.
Keep an eye on: Singleton and Allen will be featured, but Trey Potts, a former Wiliamsport star who spent the previous five seasons at Minnesota and used his COVID year to join the Nittany Lions. Potts averaged 4.8 on 220 carries the last two years with the Gophers. True freshman Landon Montgomery could be fourth.
Statistically speaking: At 181 yards per game, PSU was fourth in the Big Ten last year in team rushing.
James Franklin: "Nick can break it at any moment. Kaytron is the guy that's going to be productive carry after carry, six yards, eight yards, 12 yards. He will pop a 20-yarder in there. Just a very efficient running back who knows how to play the position."
What to expect: A lot. Behind a veteran offensive line while anticipating an inevitable transition for first-starting QB Drew Allar, a ground-and-pound attack is going to be emphasized. How many times have the Lions lost to Ohio State (answer: too many) because they couldn't control the ball and protect a lead? Singleton and Allen will give the offense a chance to manage games on its terms.
