Counter-protesters not worth mentioning

In response to the Mirror article on the No Kings rally of March 28, let’s set the record straight. I was there — proudly exercising my First Amendment right. This was my third march, and each one has been deeply meaningful. The turnout was staggering. People showed up in force to stand against the rapid erosion of our democracy. The positively charged atmosphere was exactly what a healthy civic action should be: peaceful, informed, welcoming and energized. The handful of counter-protesters? Hardly worth the headline. Their intentions weren’t subtle — they pushed through the ...

Widespread voter fraud is a myth

Fact: Widespread voter fraud by so-called illegal aliens is an absolute myth. Don’t take my word for it, but rather that of The Heritage Foundation, a prominent conservative think tank. According to Heritage, in all elections from 1982 through 2025, there has been a whopping nine total cases of ineligible voting by aliens; hardly enough to sway the outcome of a student council election, let alone a nationwide presidential one. The truth is that we never had an issue with our elections until Donald Trump ran for public office. Because he is incapable of admitting and accepting ...

Tips to improve local health care

It has been four years since my wife and I moved from Washington County, Pa., to my apartment in Antis Township. Since we are both elderly, I had to replace many physicians my wife and I had used to receive health care while living in Washington County. That was a daunting task. For the most part. I must say the health care we have both received in the Altoona area has been good to excellent. However, let me make some suggestions on how practitioners in this area can improve their services to this community. 1. Always follow up with call-backs when patients leave messages recorded on ...

The United States of America will be 250 years old this July 4. If we want this country to keep having birthdays we the patriotic men and women across the U.S. who love this country for what it has been and always will be One Nation Under God with Liberty and Justice for all. We must all stand together as Americans to make sure we keep this country moving forward in the right direction. We can never again let this country go back to the way it was four years ago under the radical Biden-Harris administration. The United States has existed because we the people believe in the ...

No Kings rally thoughts

I was pleased to see that a Mirror staff writer included perspectives from both sides of the “No Kings” rally held in Blair County. Perhaps a short news piece isn’t the place to probe some of the more bizarre, vague, and unsubstantiated claims made by a few participants. Still, one comment deserves a closer look. One speaker drew a parallel between her ancestors arriving on the Mayflower “without permission” and today’s immigration debates. That’s quite a comparison. If the next group of would‑be immigrants shows up in a 17th‑century wooden ship after a two‑month ...

Education is to train future leaders

The Hollidaysburg Area School Board engaged in a refreshing discussion April 8 about whether to approve for adoption a psychology textbook that eventually was approved — correctly — by a 6-3 margin. At a time when virtually everything is available to young people via the internet, should relevant — even if sometimes controversial — topics such as social justice and gender identity, including LGBTQ issues, be considered topics that would “poison” young people’s minds? If the information is presented correctly, as the course would seem to dictate, the answer should be ...
