Garrity better choice for governor

Stacy Garrity is simply the better choice in November’s governor race. Gon. Josh Shapiro now is leaning toward using the measles outbreak as reason to repeat the COVID rules, close down businesses, wear masks, enforcement including illegal search of home without the need for warrants. This governor wants ICE dismantled but claims he supports police. Also, he will build all those data storage on farmland and elsewhere, where he lies when recently said he had decided against the data centers, they paid him $5 million to fast track the construction before the public could find ...

Republicans must put Americans first

Despite controlling the House, Senate, White House and Supreme Court, Republicans can’t manage to accomplish anything for average Americans although they have no problem enriching the Mar-a-Lago class and serving the president. Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” eliminated food assistance for needy children and will cause millions of Americans to lose their health insurance. Republicans deliberately delayed many healthcare cuts until after the midterm election. Republicans let Trump start an unnecessary war costing American lives and depleting our munitions stockpile while costing ...

Senate won’t vote itself out of existence

Several members of the Democratic Socialists of America have won Democratic nominations for several offices. The party has proposed abolishing the Senate, the Presidency, the Electoral College, and the Supreme Court. They have not told us how they intend to do this. Article One, Section One, Clause One reads: “All legislative Power herein granted shall be vested in a Congress of the United States, which shall consist of a Senate and a House of Representatives.” Article Two, Section One, Clause One reads: “The executive Power of the United States shall be vested in a President ...

AI needs a constitution

Artificial intelligence is advancing at an extraordinary pace. Within a few years, AI systems may make decisions in medicine, finance, transportation, defense, scientific research and critical infrastructure that exceed any individual human’s understanding. That potential offers enormous benefits, but it also creates unprecedented risks. The central question is no longer whether AI will become more capable, but whether it will remain aligned with human values. Good intentions are not enough. Advanced AI should be designed so that it is structurally prevented from violating ...

Remember PSU for its positives

I am writing this regarding the recent developments at Pennsylvania State University (main campus) and the alleged drug ring operations which have tied two fraternities and their members to a large cocaine distribution network. Although I find this appalling and proper measures should be taken to discipline all of those involved, I feel that this can tarnish an otherwise excellent university with a solid academic reputation. Let’s look at some of the positives involving Penn State, which has achieved significant milestones across academics, research, student philanthropy and ...

Couple’s generosity a reminder to pass it on

On Thursday, Aug. 27, my wife and I were at the checkout at the Altoona Giant Eagle as the couple in front of us had their items rung up. Then the cashier started ringing up our items. We thought there was some confusion. The gentleman said, “I am not confused at all. The Lord has been good to me.” The lady said, “We do this often.” They proceeded to pay for our order which was close to $80! Understandably, we were stunned and still are. This couple used God’s gifts to pay it forward. Of course, we are grateful for their monetary gesture, but even more so for them being ...
