Miller, Weise spark Golden Tigers hockey team to victory
JOHNSTOWN — The Hollidaysburg Area High School ice hockey team out-scored Conemaugh Valley, 5-0, over the final two periods Tuesday night en route to an 8-2 win at 1st Summit Arena at Cambria County War Memorial Arena.
Isaac Miller scored a hat trick for the Golden Tigers, who led 3-2 after one period. Teammate Porter Weise also finished with two goals as Hollidaysburg improved to 10-7 with one game left on the schedule.
Hollidaysburg also got solo goals from Lucy Carles, Caleb Makowiecki and Ty Fitzgerald. Goalie Noah Breton stopped 18 shots on goal.
The Tigers finish the year at home on Tuesday, March 11, at 7:10 against Westmont Hilltop.

Manfred medals
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Grier School graduate and Hollidaysburg native Edith Manfred finished her sophomore indoor track season at Savannah College of Art and Design by medaling in two events at the Sun Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships on Feb. 14-15.
In the women’s 5,000 meters, she placed third in a time of 18:08, and the next day she earned a silver medal in the women’s 3,000 in 10:35. Earlier in the season at the Celebration Pointe Classic, she ran a personal best of 10:28 in the 3,000.
Duo recognized
The Penn State Altoona men’s volleyball team picked up two weekly awards from the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference.
Freshman opposite hitter Caleb Fries was tabbed as the AMCC’s Offensive Player of the Week, while sophomore middle blocker Landen Fisher was named the league’s Defensive Player of the Week. Fries and Fisher helped lead the Penn State Altoona men’s volleyball team to a pair of 3-1 road wins last week against Wilson College and Mount Aloysius College.
On the week, Fries had 35.5 points (4.4 points per set), 25 kills (3.13 kills per set), seven aces (0.88 aces per set), and six total blocks (0.75 blocks per set), with an attack percentage of .242. He currently leads the AMCC in kills (210), kills per set (3.33), aces
On the week, Fisher had 11 total blocks (one solo block, 10 block assists) and averaged 1.38 blocks per set. Among all players in the AMCC, he currently ranks third in block assists (36) and total blocks per set (0.79) while being seventh in total blocks (38).
Mounties shine
CRESSON — The Mount Aloysius rifle team won the first-ever Mid-Atlantic Rifle Conference championship this past weekend at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Members of the team included Sydney Castel, Elissa Barron, Kayla Trinkle, Molly Miller and Samantha Hayman.
The Mounties won both the smallbore competition and the air rifle title.
Junior Lion 2nd
JOHNSTOWN — Colt Sipes, a seventh-grade student athlete at Altoona, competed at the Pa. Junior High Wrestling State Championships where he finished second in his weight class at 147 pounds.
He qualified for states by winning the Area 2 Junior High Regional championship. He finished his seventh-grade season with a record of 46-3.
