A stop at the Duncansville Rutter's, 935 Plank Road, turned out to be fortuitous for a Lancaster County couple who purchased a $1 Million Money Tree scratch-off ticket and won the top prize.
Pennsylvania Lottery officials presented John Fresh and his wife Jan Morrissey with a $1 million commemorative check Wednesday in Middletown. Rutters will receive a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
"We were in that area for a gun show and stopped by Rutter's for a bathroom break. That's when we decided to purchase a ticket," Fresh said, noting he bought the ticket on Saturday, Jan. 20.
"I had $20 in my pocket and decided to buy that ticket," he said. "We scratched it when we went back to the motel in Altoona and still weren't sure how much we won until we took it back to the store the next day."
"I asked Jan for a pen, because I wanted to sign that ticket right away," Fresh added.
"I didn't believe him, until we scanned the barcode Sunday morning," Morrissey said.
The married couple are both retired and have a passion for volunteering and travel. They plan to donate money to their local fire department and take family to Disney World. The two also want to take a cruise to Alaska and visit Scotland.
