Ellen Earnestine (Clark) Fisher, lovingly known as "Miss Ellie," 80, of Williamsburg, passed away Thursday after a brief illness. She was born in Marion County, S.C.
On Sept. 8, 1965, Ellen married John W. Fisher at Gapway Baptist Church in Mullins, S.C. Together they shared 61 years of marriage, building a life filled with love, family and countless memories.
Miss Ellie was a hardworking, generous and loving woman whose kindness touched the lives of so many. She dedicated more than 50 years of her life to J.C. Penney, where she was an outstanding salesperson and was loved by all who knew her. Her strong work ethic, warm personality and genuine care for others made her a special person both on and off the job.
Miss Ellie was a proud mother who loved her daughters and cherished her family. Her family was a source of great pride, and she expressed her love through the everyday things that mattered most: making sure everyone was fed, offering a listening ear and welcoming loved ones with open arms. Her generosity and devotion to those she loved were among the many qualities that made her so special.
Miss Ellie found happiness in life's simple pleasures and, most of all, in sharing them with others. She enjoyed a good meal, a cup of coffee, a glass of sweet tea or a Dr Pepper with friends and neighbors. Whether gathered around the table or enjoying a conversation in the backyard, she loved visiting with those around her and making everyone feel welcome. She always made sure everyone got their fill before leaving, and it was not uncommon for her guests to head home with a care package for later.
Giving came naturally to her, and she never wanted anyone to leave empty-handed.
An avid reader, Miss Ellie treasured a good book and quiet moments spent watching and feeding the birds. She lovingly cared for her beloved pups, Mia and Blackie, who brought her companionship and joy. Spring was her favorite season, and her love of flowers reflected the beauty she appreciated in the world around her.
Above all, Miss Ellie had a strong faith that was an important part of her life. Her generous spirit, hardworking nature and love for family, friends and neighbors were a testament to the kind of woman she was. She had a way of making people feel at home, whether through a shared meal, a friendly conversation or a simple act of kindness. Those who knew her will remember her not only for her warm hospitality, but also for the love and thoughtfulness she shared so freely.
In addition to her beloved husband, John, Miss Ellie is survived by her daughters, Robin E. Brantner (Scott) and Susan R. Miller (Tony), both of Williamsburg; her grandsons, Ryan S. Brantner of Williamsburg and Owen F. Brantner (Emily) of Chattanooga, Tenn.; her sister, Vera Stroud; and brother, Joseph Clark, both in South Carolina; sister-in-law, Debora J. Fisher of Hollidaysburg; and many beloved nieces and nephews scattered throughout the Palmetto State.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Myrtle Richardson; her father, George B. Clark; her stepfather, Jim Richardson; her sisters, Ruby (Clark) Hardee and infant sister, Mary Caroline Clark; and her step siblings: Angie E. Clark White, Maxie L. Clark, George L. Clark, Ruth J. Clark Cullipher and Mary Viola "Dollie" Clark Johnson; and great-niece, Macie Stroud, all in South Carolina.
Miss Ellie leaves behind a legacy of hard work, faith, generosity and love. Her family and friends will forever cherish the memories of shared meals, cups of coffee, glasses of sweet tea and Dr. Pepper, backyard conversations and the countless ways she made life a little brighter for those around her. Though she will be deeply missed, the love she gave and the memories she created will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. Her table may be quieter now, but the warmth of her welcome and the kindness of her spirit will never be forgotten.
Friends and family will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, 2026, at Williamsburg Alliance Church; and from 10 until the 11 a.m. funeral service Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2026, at the church.
It was Miss Ellie's great desire to be laid to rest at Britton's Neck Cemetery in Marion County, S.C., near the place she called home. Her final resting place will honor her deep connection to South Carolina and the roots she carried with her throughout her life.
Rest peacefully, Miss Ellie. You were loved more than words can say, and you will be missed more than you will ever know.
