Eight turnovers doom Carroll
CLEARFIELD — Clearfield’s Taye Lynch intercepted Bishop Carroll quarterback Jake Zazvrskey on the first play from scrimmage in Friday night’s regular season finale at the Bison Sports Complex.
It was a sign of things to come.
The Bison picked off Zazvrskey three times, forced five fumbles (recovering one) and scored two defensive touchdowns on the way to a 49-0 victory over the Huskies to complete the ninth undefeated regular season campaign in school history and seventh under head coach Tim Janocko.
“Everybody really contributed tonight. It was a whole team victory,” Janocko said. “This is really special for us going undefeated. It’s not easy in our league. To be perfect with the competition we play is very, very difficult, so credit to our kids and credit to our coaching staff.”
After Lynch set up the Bison with a short field at the Bishop Carroll 25, Clearfield needed just four plays to find the end zone with Caleb Freeland getting the payoff on a 4-yard TD run to put the hosts on top 7-0 just 1:15 into the game.
Disaster struck the Huskies offense again on their second drive when Clearfield’s Ryan Lazauskas took the ball away from Evan Becquet and rumbled 30 yards for a score just 23 seconds after the Freeland TD to make it 13-0. The PAT was no good.
The Huskies got something going on their next possession, moving the ball from their own 30 to the Bison 26. But a 15-yard penalty backed Bishop Carroll up to the 40 and two plays later Zazvrskey threw his second interception.
This time it was Jake Lezzer making the big defensive play for the Bison, returning the ball to the Huskies 47.
On the next snap, Clearfield quarterback Isaac Rumery threw a deep pass to Lezzer, who looked like he was going to take it all the way. But Lezzer lost the ball at the the 1-yard line, fumbling it into the end zone.
Lynch was there to pounce on the ball in the back of the end zone for the score and Rumery hit a wide open Spencer Graham for the two-point conversion to make the score 21-0 with 2:51 to play in the first quarter.
The Bison added another quick score on their next possession as Rumery hit Freeland for a 56-yard TD pass on the the first play of the second quarter to complete a 3-play, 69-yard drive and give the hosts a commanding 28-0 advantage just 13 seconds into the stanza.
Clearfield went on to score three more times in the first half with Oliver Billotte putting the exclamation point on a dominant two quarters of football with an 80-yard interception return for a TD with 12 seconds to play in the second quarter.
Billotte outleaped Zazvrskey, who tried to knock the ball out of the Bison freshman’s hands after it was initially deflected at the line of scrimmage. The second defensive score of the game for the Bison snuffed out a 10-play drive that saw Bishop Carroll move the ball from its own 36 to the Clearfield 10.
‘“He’s athletic,” Janocko said of Billotte. “And for a freshman, he carries himself very well. You can’t tell he’s a freshman. Hats off to him and our whole defense.”
Caleb Freeland and Taye Lynch scored the Bison’s other two touchdowns. Freeland had a 2-yard run and Lynch caught a 42-yard pass from Rumery.
The Bison quarterback was an efficient 5-of-7 for 192 yards and three touchdowns in his one half of work and stands just three TD passes short of the Bison career record of 76 held by Chad Kroell.
Brett Zattoni led the Bison ground game with 42 yards on three carries. Clearfield had nine different players carry the ball a total of 30 times for 150 yards.
Clearfield had 347 yards of offense, while Bishop Carroll totaled just 90.
Zazvrskey led the team on the ground with 25 yards on 18 carries. Hunter Dumm added nine totes for 22 yards. Evan Becquet caught three passes for 24 yards.
Clearfield (10-0) is the top seed in the District 6 Class 4A playoffs and will host DuBois next week if the Beavers choose to opt in to the postseason. DuBois (4-6) beat Brookville 16-7.
