Tyrone can’t finish drives in loss to Clearfield

CLEARFIELD — Tyrone ran 20 plays in Clearfield territory in the first half of Friday’s game at the Bison Sports Complex, but had nothing to show for it and trailed 21-0 at the break.

The Golden Eagles were unable to overcome the early deficit and fell to the Bison, 35-7.

Tyrone took the ball into Clearfield territory on three of its first four possessions, but two ended with interceptions and the third was a turnover on downs.

The Eagles were also picked off in the end zone with nine seconds left in the half.

Despite the 21-0 deficit at the half, Tyrone only trailed the Bison in total yards 192-186. Clearfield outgained the Eagles 302-301 in the game.

“I think the game was a lot closer than the score,” Tyrone coach Jason Wilson said. “I think it was a tough game. The turnovers, especially in the red zone, aren’t going to help you win a game.”

“I’m really happy with our defense,” Clearfield coach Tim Janocko said. “We were changing a lot of kids in and out. Three big interceptions and two big stops on fourth down and if we get touches, we’re going to be dangerous offensively.”

Spencer Graham picked off Parker Mitchell in the end zone to end Tyrone’s first threat with 7:49 left in the first quarter, and Bison running back Ty Bender busted off a 42-yard run a couple plays later to put the Bison in business at the Eagle 7.

Clearfield quarterback Isaac Rumery tossed a 5-yard TD pass to Jake Lezzer two plays later to put the Bison on top 7-0.

Clearfield’s Micah Heichal made the next big defensive play for the Bison, intercepting Mitchell at the Clearfield 32 to thwart another drive.

Bender took the handoff on the very next play and went 66 yards to the Tyrone 14, setting up his own 1-yard plunge with 10:19 to play in the second quarter. Bender ran 22 times for 170 yards.

“We gave up a couple big plays on defense that put them in scoring position early on,” Wilson said. “We have to eliminate those big plays.”

Tyrone went three-and-out on its next possession and punted to Graham, who returned it 61 yards to the Eagle 19.

Rumery found Micah Heichel for a 19-yard score two plays later to give Clearfield a 21-0 advantage.

The Bison tacked on another touchdown on Rumery’s third scoring strike, this one going for 11 yards to Eli Glass with 4:23 left in the third quarter.

Rumery was 7-of-10 for 97 yards and three scores. He has thrown for 1,670 yards and 21 touchdowns on the year.

Tyrone got on the board in the fourth quarter with Mitchell finishing off an eight-play, 56-yard drive with a 1-yard sneak with 6:13 left to play. Mitchell ran 13 times for 63 yards and completed six of his 14 pass attempts for 103 yards.

Brandon Loose, who had 127 yards on 25 carries, ran four times for 16 yards in the drive, picking up two first downs along the way.

After a failed onsides kick, Clearfield went 44 yards in seven plays with Rumery covering the final yard on a QB sneak to set the 35-7 final.

Clearfield improved to 4-3 win the win, while Tyrone slipped to 2-5.

“If we want to be a good team, we have to eliminate those mistakes,” Wilson said. “Right now, our backs are against the wall. We’re going to be fighting to get into the playoffs. This is a game that we were hoping would maybe give us some momentum to get things going.

“I thought we played well besides those turnovers and those big plays. We have to keep our heads up.”

Tyrone travels to Hollidaysburg on Friday.
