UNIVERSITY PARK -- The Penn State men's ice hockey team, ranked No. 1 in the country, fell to Big Ten foe Ohio State Friday night in a seven-round shootout after both teams skated to a 3-3 tie at the end of regulation at the Pegula Ice Arena.
The Buckeyes get the extra point in the standings because of the shootout, but the game did end in an official tie. Sam McCormick won it for Ohio State with a goal in the shootout.
Thanks to a 23-3 shots on goal advantage, Penn State took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a James Robinson goal. The Nittany Lions went up 2-1 in the second period on a Vince Pedrie goal.
The Nittany Lions went up 3-2 in the third period, thanks to an Alec Marsh goal. Ohio State tied it in on a Mason Jobst goal. He finished with two of his team's three goals. Josh Healey had the other goal.
With the tie the Nittany Lions move to 16-2-2 overall and 5-1-1-0 in Big Ten play while OSU now sits at 11-4-6 on the year and 2-2-1-1 in conference action.
The two teams go back at it tonight at 7 at the Arena.
