Altoona native Tom Brantner, who is the head cross country coach at James Valley Christian High School in Huron, South Dakota, recently directed the team to its second straight South Dakota boys state Class B team championship.
Brantner's son, Kedric, was also the first runner across the finish line for James Valley Christian, finishing fifth in the race with a time of 17:36.14.
Tom Brantner, who ran cross country at both Altoona Area High School and the former Keith Junior High School during his days growing up in Blair County, graduated from Trinity Bible College in Ellendale, North Dakota. Brantner is currently the lead pastor of the Huron, S.D. First Assembly of God.
Brantner, who is married and the father of three, also earned coach-of-the-year honors in 2015, when the James Valley Christian boys squad won the Class B team title.
Portage stars recognized
MEYERSDALE -- Four Portage Area High School athletes were named WestPAC all-conference selections for the 2016 fall sports seasons.
Braedon St. Clair and Jordan Beyer were selected in football, Lauren McCabe was selected in girls volleyball, and Lucas Miko was selected in boys golf.
Portage is a member of the WestPAC with Berlin Brothersvalley, Blacklick Valley, Conemaugh Township, Conemaugh Valley, Ferndale, Meyersdale, North Star, Rockwood, Salisbury-Elk Lick, Shade, Shanksville-Stoneycreek, Turkeyfoot Valley, and Windber.
Gillam wins pro event
ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- Jimmy Gillam, a Tyrone graduate, claimed a one-shot victory over Garrett Browning at Belmont Lake Golf Course after firing a second straight 71 in a Coastal Players Tour professional golf tournament in late September.
Dylan Bedy shot the low round of tournament (70) to finish in third. David Kostyal had a second straight 73 to win the amateur division.
