Donald Henry Brett

March 9, 1942 - April 28, 2018

Donald Henry Brett, 76, Altoona, passed away peacefully at his residence Saturday morning after a lengthy battle with cancer.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Leonard and Emily (Luxenberg) Brett. On April 18, 1970, he married his “bride” and love of his life, Sheryl DeMatteis.

Surviving are his wife, Sherry; two daughters: Nicole and husband, Tat, of Boca Raton, Fla., and Alison and husband, Brad, of McLean, Va.; a son, Adam and wife, Krista, of Camp Hill; eight grandchildren: AJ, Casey, Blake, Sadie, Zach, Ellie, Lex and Owen; a brother, Stephen Brett of Boulder, Colo.; and a sister, Jean Brett of New York City.

He was a 1960 graduate of Altoona High School and a 1964 graduate of Penn State University. After a brief period working in New York City, his love for family and Altoona brought him back home to work for the family business, women’s clothing retailer Meyer Jonasson, with his father, Leonard. Together, they created a store that became a pillar of the downtown Altoona community. After his father’s death, he continued to own and operate the downtown Altoona store and expanded to two more stores in the coming years.

Don’s love for his community extended to the many organizations he participated in and supported. He was past president of Temple Beth Israel, and he served as a trustee of Altoona First Savings Bank and as chairman of its Credit Committee for many years. He was also a member of the Greater Altoona Development Corp., Altoona Parking Authority, Altoona Blair County Development Corp., Rotary Club of Altoona and a founding member of PALS club.

He was an avid reader, golfer and supporter of all things local. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
