Jordan Samuel Bailinger


Jordan Samuel Bailinger, 87, Hollidaysburg, passed away early Saturday morning at The Lutheran Home at Hollidaysburg.

He was born in Philadelphia, son of the late Nathan and Rebecca (Adler) Bailinger. He was twice married: first to Marcia Goldberg, who preceded him in death, and then he married Millicent (Krapin) Mermel on July 9, 1989, at Agudath Achim Synagogue, Altoona.

Surviving are his wife; a son, Daniel; a stepson, Howard Mermel; two stepdaughters: Wendy (John) Florick and Marcy (Michael) Gessel; a grandson, Marshall Mosher; four step-grandchildren: Laura Florick and Benjamin, Robert and Daniel Gessel; a twin sister, Joan Greenblatt; and five nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Leslie Ann Mosher; a sister, Ada-Belle Gottlieb; and two brothers-in-law: Aaron Gottlieb and Maurice Greenblatt.

Jordan grew up in Atlantic City, N.J. He graduated from Rider College in Trenton, N.J., in 1952. He came to Altoona, working for Puritan Sportswear as a traveling salesman. He mainly sold men’s suits and clothing from the manufacturer to retail stores. When he retired, Jordan delivered Meals on Wheels for 13 years.

He enjoyed fishing, playing bridge, baking bread, telling stories and writing letters to the Altoona Mirror’s Opinion page. He also enjoyed being with his family.

Jordan belonged to Agudath Achim Congregation, the Greater Altoona Jewish Federation, Zionist Organization of America and B’nai B’rith.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 30, 2018, at Agudath Achim Synagogue, 1306 17th St., Altoona, Rabbi Josh Wohl officiating. Interment will be at Agudath Achim Cemetery, Altoona.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Agudath Achim Congregation, 1306 17th St., Altoona, PA 16601 or to Allegheny Lutheran Social Ministries, 998 Logan Blvd., Altoona, PA 16602.
