William D. ‘Bill’ Thaler, D.M.D.

Dr. William D. “Bill” Thaler, 86, Altoona, passed away Wednesday after a long and courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Bill was born in Johnstown, son of the late Morris and Gertrude (Beim) Thaler.

Surviving are a daughter, Amy Seltzer of Altoona; five sons: Eric (Lynnette) Thaler of Altoona, Bruce (Phyllis) Thaler of Hollidaysburg, Michael (Sharon) Thaler of Montpelier, Va., Matthew (Marieta) Thaler of Columbia, S.C., and Jonathan (Barbara) Thaler of Altoona; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters: Helen Sandler and Esther Nederlander.

Bill was a 1949 graduate of Windber High School where he played basketball. He was a 1953 graduate of George Washington University, where he played tennis. From 1953-55, he served in the U.S. Army. He was a 1959 graduate of University of Pittsburgh Dental School, and then he practiced dentistry from 1959 until 1998.

He was an avid fisherman, baker, tennis player and runner. He was also an avid fan of Pittsburgh sports.

He was a member of Agudath Achim Synagogue, Altoona, and served as president of Seventh District Dental Society. Bill also served as coordinator of continuing education for University of Pittsburgh Dental School for more than 20 years.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Friends will be received from 11:30 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service, today, May 12, 2017, at E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc., 2309 Broad Ave., Altoona, Rabbi Josh Wohl officiating. Interment will be at Agudath Achim Cemetery, Altoona.
