Saul Paikin

Saul Paikin, 90, Altoona, died Monday at Altoona Center for Nursing Care.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Samuel and Anna (Katzen) Paikin. He was twice married, first to Shirley (Adelson), who preceded him in death in 1998. He married Anna (Kaplan) Caldwell in 2000.

Surviving are his wife, Anna; two sons; five grandchildren; two nieces: Lisa and Nadeen Nerenberg; and a great-nephew: Michael Nerenberg.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Shirley Adelson; a sister and brother-in-law: Shirley Nerenberg and husband, Leonard; and a nephew, Carl Nerenberg.

He was a 1944 graduate of Altoona High School and graduated from Penn State University in 1948 with a degree in commerce and finance.

Saul served in the U.S. Army as a cryptographer at Fort Monmouth in New Jersey. He then served in the U.S. Army Reserve until 1954. Saul was the owner/operator of S. Paikin Scrap Iron and Waste Paper Co. He retired with 20 years of service.

Saul was a lifelong member of the Agudath Achim Congregation. He was a member for 23 years at Park Hills Country Club, the American Legion A&J Iaia Post 827, the Bavarian Aid Society, Golden Nuggets and Blair Senior Services.

Saul enjoyed golfing and dancing. He was a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Penn State. He was known for his sense of humor.

A private service will be held at the convenience of the family. Interment will be at Agudath Achim Cemetery in Altoona.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be to Agudath Achim Congregation, 1306 17th St., Altoona, PA 16601. Arrangements are by E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home Inc., 2309 Broad Ave., Altoona.
