Jakob Golant, 96, Altoona, died Monday at Maybrook Hills Health and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born in Otwock, Poland, son of the late Joshua and Pesa Tuttle (Olschefsky) Golant. He married Anne Gertraud Irmer on Aug. 25, 1949, in Berlin. She preceded him in death on June 13, 2011.
Surviving are four children: Benjamin Golant and wife, Barbara, of Prior Lake, Minn., Joseph Golant and wife, Denise, of Allentown, Esther Golant of Kearneysville, W.Va., and Debbie Badawi and husband, Mohamed, of Parkton, Md.; eight grandchildren: David, Sara, Aslan, Erik, Danny, Yosef, Alia and Sarah; 10 great-grandchildren and the Berger and Hartman families.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Rachel Berger.
At the beginning of WWII, Jakob and his sister, Rachel, escaped to Russia. They remained in touch during the war even though Jakob served in the Russian Army. When they reunited, they discovered that the rest of their family had perished in the Holocaust. After having lived in many places, he considered Altoona as his home.
Jakob retired from Martinsburg Shoe Factory as a foreman. He was a member of Agudath Achim, where he was very active. He enjoyed doing home improvements and spending time with his family.
Friends will be received from 11:30 a.m. until the 12:30 p.m. funeral service on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016, at Agudath Achim Synagogue, 1306 17th Street, Altoona, Rabbi Josh Wohl officiating. Interment will be at Agudath Achim Cemetery.
