State police are investigating the death of a 7-year-old boy this morning in Huntingdon County.
State police Trooper David McGarvey confirmed a Tyrone Area School District student was found dead this morning by a school bus driver in Huntingdon County before school.
State police determined by late morning the boy had been struck by a vehicle and state police crash reconstruction specialists are currently on scene along with the forensics unit.
State police said Thursday afternoon that investigators have ruled out the boy was struck by a passing motorist.
The boy was hit at low speed, and troopers have served a search warrant for a vehicle and talked to a driver who was unaware a child was there, state police noted.
State police ask that anyone with information about the boy’s death to call 627-3161.
Tyrone Area School Superintendent Cathy Harlow has posted a statement to the district’s web site concerning the crash.
Harlow said the student was a second grade student and was struck and killed by a vehicle. State police have also confirmed it appears the child was struck by a vehicle but the investigation is ongoing.
Harlow said the bus driver who discovered the boy called 911 and waiting with the child until first responders arrived. the district is currently assisting state police in their investigation, Harlow added.
“On-site counseling is being provided by district personnel and additional crisis resource for students who are aware of the situation as well as staff,” Harlow wrote. “We will share more information as we process through this tragic situation.
“Our school community is truly grieved by this terrible loss. Please keep the family in in your thoughts and prayers,” she said.
