Suspect held in child’s death

Altoona police say 18-month-old suffered unspecified injuries

A suspect is in custody in the death of an 18-month-old Altoona girl.

The girl, identified by Altoona police as Angela Elizabeth Beard, died Thursday at a Pittsburgh hospital after she was taken off of life support.

While police were tight-lipped Thursday, Altoona police indicated that the girl suffered unspecified injuries on Sunday.

“The Altoona Police Department is investigating a very serious incident that occurred on Sunday, May 20, just before 9 a.m. on the 900 block of 23rd Avenue,” Altoona police Sgt. Matthew Plummer said Thursday.

Plummer added that, “Altoona detectives are working diligently with doctors and medical staff to determine the origin of injuries.” Police did not elaborate on the extent of the girl’s injuries, but Altoona police Lt. Jeffrey Pratt said officers were dispatched Sunday morning after a call to 911 for a child in cardiac arrest.

Pratt said officers performed CPR on the child until AMED arrived.

Plummer confirmed the girl’s death Thursday evening.

Blair County Coroner Patricia Ross said an autopsy will be performed today.

Police said the investigation is ongoing and more information would be released at a later time.

Plummer urged the public to show respect toward the child’s family and “refrain from spreading allegations on social media that may alter the investigation.”

Plummer said late Thursday investigators were preparing charges against the individual in custody but declined to name the suspect.

A Gofundme.com page has been established to accept donations for the child’s family, according to a family member. A fund also has been established at First National Bank under the girl’s name.

Starting at $3.83/week.
