Cove barn fire kills goats, calves

A Morrisons Cove barn filled with goats and calves went up in flames early Tuesday, killing many of the animals and destroying the structure, firefighters said.

Responders were called about 2 a.m. to the scene along Fair Valley Road in Huston Township, Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Co. Chief Randy Acker said.

A heat lamp used to warm young goats likely set fire to some nearby hay, Acker said.

The flames spread, destroying the barn and a neighboring calf hutch before responders could extinguish them.

The property owners learned of the fire after a passing snowplow truck driver saw the glow of the fire and knocked on their door, Acker said.

A few of the animals were saved, Acker said, but many died in the fire. He didn’t have an estimate Tuesday of the number of animals lost.

In addition to those from Martinsburg, the fire drew responders from Freedom Township, Williamsburg and Duncansville.
