Lieutenant gov. stops in Bedford

Stack stresses need to train students in STEM studies

Pennsylvania’s lieutenant governor stressed the need to train students in STEM — science, technology, engineering and math — during a visit to Bedford Area High School recently.

“One of my main goals during my time in office is to invest in schools, and the young people invest in Pennsylvania companies, Lt. Gov. Mike Stack said Thursday.

Company leaders have told him they started their businesses in the state because they believe “that we are job ready.”

“So I personally believe that we need to get the kids trained to go to work, and we don’t want to talk about the unemployment rates except for pointing at other states,” Stack said.

Superintendent Allen Sell said only 25 percent of women pursue STEM classes.

“We need to focus and mentor these young women and encourage them to participate in this program,” he said. “Most individuals that graduate from schools move away to get jobs outside of Pennsylvania. We only have about 12 percent of the population in Bedford that have a bachelor’s degree, so our focus is to have the students that get a college education to stay in Pennsylvania, work here, raise their families here.”

Sell said one of his main goals as superintendent is to focus on classroom infrastructure and increase in technology “where the students can learn, anywhere any place, anytime.”
