Blair County Planning Commission members will support Martinsburg's application for grant funding for environmental assessments and a hazardous material survey at 114 W. Penn St. in the borough.
The borough has applied to the state Department of Community and Economic Development Industrial Sites Reuse Program for a grant of $18,731, said Randy Stoltz, borough manager.
If the grant is approved, it would cover 75 percent of the cost or $14,048 -- and the borough would be responsible for the local share of $4,682, Stoltz said.
The proposed project calls for Phase I and Phase II environmental assessments and a hazardous materials survey of the Hershberger Garage facility, which has been vacant for about five years.
The goal of the project is to evaluate and mitigate any regulated or petroleum substances at the site, demolish the existing structure and prepare the site for commercial development, said Jamie L. Klink, community planner.
The property is presently owned by SA Acquisition Property of Englewood, Colo., Stoltz said.
""There are some existing businesses who would like to expand and are interested," Stoltz said.
