INDIANA, Pa. – A number of area students have been selected for the Sutton Scholars academic achievement scholarship program at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
“Sutton Scholars are an elite group,” James Begany, IUP vice president for enrollment management and communications, said. “We’ve established this program to recognize the best of our freshman applicants, ones who have very strong academics and outstanding promise.”
Students must apply to be considered for the program and are chosen following an on-campus competitive interview process.
Started in 2012, the Sutton Scholarship is funded by the Foundation for IUP, along with gifts received from alumni, friends and employees. IUP’s Class of 2012 designated a portion of its class gift to this scholarship fund.
The scholarship is available to Pennsylvania students and can be renewed for four years of study. Sutton Scholarship recipients are also eligible for the Summer Scholars Academy, which provides scholarship funds for four years of summer course work.
The local recipients are:
n Micah Paul Dilling, East Freedom, son of Kevin Dilling and Cheryl Wolfe, a senior at Central High School, Martinsburg. He is a member of the Central Marching Band, the Fusion Youth at Smith Corner Church and was selected for the National Honor Society. He will be a member of IUP’s College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
n Elam Gates, Flinton, son of Cherie Gates and Rick Gates, a senior at Glendale High School, Flinton. He was selected for the National Honor Society and Tri-M Modern Music Masters Society. He is a member of the Glendale High School concert band, marching band, jazz band, chorus, drama club, science club and Students Against Drunk Driving/Remembering Adam. He qualified for district and regional chorus. He plans to major in business management-finance at IUP.
n Delaney Hallinan, Altoona, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hallinan, a senior at Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic High School, Altoona. She was selected for the National Honor Society. She is a member and captain of Bishop Guilfoyle Lady Marauders varsity soccer team, the school drama club, mock trial, eco club, writes for her school newspaper and volunteers at blood drives. She plans to major in journalism at IUP.
n Colter Long, Hollidaysburg, son of Tim and Jennifer Long, a senior at Hollidaysburg Area Senior High School. He was accepted into the Robert E. Cook Honors College, is a 2014 AP Scholar with Honor Award recipient, was selected for the National Honor Society, was listed in the 2014 Altoona Mirror “20 under 20 Future Leaders of Central Pennsylvania,” was selected for district and regional orchestra festivals, district jazz band and won a Hollidaysburg High School Academic H-Pin and Achievement Certificate. He has a perfect 4.0 grade point average. He is a member of the high school marching band, jazz band and symphonic band, and is first-chair trumpet. He is a violin concertmaster, is in the chamber string group and is first-chair violin in the ensemble. He is a member of the high school swim team and broke three school records and two pool records, and was a PIAA District 6 Champion in the 100 breaststroke and 200 free relay and was a PIAA state qualifier, short course and long course YMCA nationals qualifier. He is a member of Ward Avenue Presbyterian Church and is a worship assistant, was music director for the holiday play, was part of the pet blessings event. He also participated in the humane society food collection. He will be a student in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at IUP.
n Roy Lynn, Williamsburg, son of Michael and Katina Lynn, a senior at Williamsburg Community High School. He is a high honor roll student, was Rotary Student of the Month and MERF Radio Student of the Month. He was selected for National Honor Society. He is the senior class president, is a member of Student Government, Travel Club, Library Club, Aevidum, band, chorus, Creative Compassions, speech team, quiz bowl team, math league, track and field and cross country teams and was the 2014 Homecoming Prince. He plans to major in social student education-history at IUP.
n Emily Miller, Tyrone, daughter of Shad Miller of Huntingdon and Tracey McCaulley of Tyrone, a senior at Bellwood-Antis High School. She is a member of Mainstreet Dance Company, the International Order of Rainbow for Girls and her school chorus. She was selected for the National Honor Society. She plans to major in speech-language pathology and audiology at IUP.
n Emily O’Donnell, Altoona, daughter of James and Sharon O’Donnell, a senior at Altoona Area High School. She was a Pennsylvania Music Educators Association district, regional and all-state concert band member and participated in the festivals for district band, orchestra, regional band and state band. She was selected for Altoona Mirror “20 under 20 Future Leaders of Central Pennsylvania” and was selected for the National Honor Society. She is a drum major in her high school marching band and is a member of concert band, wind ensemble, pep band, orchestra and pit orchestra. She is a Fanatics of Language and Culture vice president and completed in the APPLES Foreign Language Competition. She is a mock trial member and high school student ambassador and was a member of the Pennsylvania Junior Academy of Science. She volunteers for Operation Christmas Child, “Tune-up Toona” community program, reads to children in elementary schools and is a junior counselor at Camp Kanesatake. She is active in her youth group at Grace Bible Church. She plans to major in English education at IUP.
n Briana Shriver, Roaring Spring, daughter of Dave and Kay Lynn Shriver, a senior at Central High School. She was a Rotary Student of the Month and was selected for the National Honor Society. She is a member of the soccer and track and field teams. She plans to major in communications media at IUP.
n Lynzi Smith, Claysburg, daughter of Jon and Teresa Smith, a senior at Claysburg-Kimmel High School. She won two state awards in the VFW Ladies Auxiliary Young American Creative Patriot Art Contest. She plans to major in nutrition-dietetics at IUP.
n Tony Gene Anthony II, Portage, son of Kenneth and Joyce Bailey, Portage, and Tony and Shirley Anthony, Pittsburgh, a senior at Portage Area High School. He has been selected for the National Honor Society and received the Academic Achievement Award and was recognized at a Student of the Month. He was on the scholastic quiz team and participated in American Mathematics Competitions. He is a member of jazz band and was selected for county band. He is member of chorus and a Capella groups and was selected for county chorus, district chorus and regional chorus. He is a member of the drama club and participated in several plays and is a member of the Interact Club and SADD. He has been a football and track team member and has been a member of the school soccer team for four years. He has volunteered to sing for shut-ins, participated in a community play at the Cresson Lake Playhouse and in a drama charity event. He is a member of First Lutheran Church and the youth ministry group and participated in a mission trip to New Orleans. He is a member of his church choir and is a server. He plans to major in physics-pre-engineering at IUP.
n Alexis Edwards, Beaverdale, daughter of John and Christine Edwards, a senior at Forest Hills High School, Sidman. She was selected for the National Honor Society and is treasurer of the organization. She is the Forest Hills Marching Rangers drum major. As a member of Future Business Leaders of America, she participated in the state event. She is a member of jazz band, concert, band, clarinet quartet, clarinet trio, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association district band and regional band, Cambria County band, Johnson Civic Band and Forest Hills Community Band. She plans to major in music education at IUP.
n Joshua Hodgson, Colver, son of Fred and Diane Sauger, a senior at Central Cambria High School, Ebensburg. He was a district and regional finalist in the Laurel Highland High School Speech League and state and national competitor for National Catholic Forensics League and competed in the Art in Bloom program. He is performer and volunteer at Cresson Lake Playhouse and Central Cambria Music Theater group and is a member of his high school chorus, Forensic Team and men’s track and field teams. He plans to major in studio art-graphic design at IUP.
n Kristen Kundrod, Sidman, daughter of Rodney and Karen Kundrod, a senior at Forest Hills High School. She was ninth-grade student of the year, won highest honors, is a Lions Club Outstanding Girl award winner, a perfect attendance award and outstanding student award winner. She is treasurer of the student council, was selected for and serves as historian of the National Honor Society, is vice president of Spanish Honor society, was involved in drama, media and SADD. She was captain of the volleyball team and was also a member of the softball team. She was the student representative to Forest Hills School Board and was a student representative of her church parish council and volunteers with religious education and Christian helping program in her church. She plans to major in speech-language pathology and audiology at IUP.
n Brooke Lyons, Ebensburg, daughter of Jim and Laurel Lyons, a senior at Central Cambria High School. She is a high honor roll student and was selected for the National Honor Society. She is a member of the varsity basketball and track teams, the Interact Club, participates in her school musical, and volunteers for Special Olympics and Relay for Life. She plans to major in nursing at IUP.
n Tyler Miller, Salix, son of Jason C. Miller and Jennifer C. Miller, a senior at Forest Hills High School. He is involved with forensics, drama, Future Business Leaders of America, media and is a reading companion. He plans to major in journalism at IUP.
n Abigail LaBue, daughter of Brad and Cheryl LaBue, DuBois, a senior at DuBois Area High School. LaBue is a member of National Honor Society, BUSTED! Club, varsity softball, and homecoming court. She volunteers at the Special Olympics, has dual-enrollment at Penn State, and is employed at Over the Top Food and Ice Cream. She will attend IUP in the fall as a speech pathology and audiology major.
n Dannielle McCain, daughter of David and Bethann McCain, Clearfield, a senior at Clearfield Area School District. McCain is a graduate of Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week and a member of Spanish Honors Society. She is a Girl Scout of Western Pennsylvania and does Goshin Jitsu karate. She will attend IUP in the fall as a journalism and communications media major.
n Jessica D. Way, West Decatur, daughter of Denise Way, West Decatur, and Lowell Way, a senior at Philipsburg Osceola Area High School. Way is a black belt, drum major, a member of select choir, women’s choir, marching band, jazz band, symphonic band, martial arts, drama club, Girl Scouts, and Tri-M. She will attend IUP in the fall as an early childhood education major.
