Annual Family Health and Safety Fair is Saturday
BELLWOOD — The Bellwood-Antis Public Library’s 13th Annual Health and Safety Fair, co-sponsored by Tyrone Regional Health Network and the Northern Blair County Recreation Center, will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Bellwood-Antis Public Library at 526 Main St.
The event brings together numerous area agencies and organizations. Those who attend can take advantage of a variety of free health screenings, talk to a number of health professionals and gather health and safety information from many different agencies. There will also be activities for children. And The Friends of the Library will hold a refreshment sale during the event to benefit the library.
Community members can kick off the day running or walking in the Run for Reading 5K Race organized by NBCRC. The race begins at 8:30 a.m. and starts and ends at the Bellwood Library. Run for Reading entry fees will benefit children’s programs at the Bellwood-Antis Public Library and the Northern Blair County Recreation Center. Tyrone Regional Health Network will provide free health screenings for total blood cholesterol, blood glucose, pulse oximetry, grip and pinch strength, body mass index (BMI) and balance. A 12-hour fasting is recommended for those who participate in the cholesterol and glucose blood screening.
Hands Only CPR information will be available. And diabetes related information will be provided by a diabetes nurse specialist. Information regarding the broad range of services offered by TRHN in Tyrone and neighboring communities will also be provided.
The following groups and services will participate:
n DaVita, a national leader in kidney dialysis care, will provide information on kidney health and the dialysis services available on the TRHN campus.
n ENT Associates of Central PA will provide hearing screening and information about their services and their Tyrone office location.
n Lion Care Tyrone, a service of the Penn State School of Medicine, will provide free blood pressure screening and information about the monthly Lion Care free health clinic located on the Tyrone Regional Health Network campus.
n All of Us will provide information about this nationwide research project of the National Institutes of Health and how it will help create a healthier future through precision medicine. Community members can also get details on how they can participate.
n Center for Organ Recovery and Education (CORE) will provide information about organ donation and donor cards.
n Healthy Blair County Coalition will provide information on efforts to build a healthier Blair County.
n Blair County Emergency Management will have the Blair County emergency command trailer on-site for community members to tour, and will provide emergency preparedness info.
n Phoenix Rehabilitation Center will provide vertigo screening.
n Altoona Area Lyme Disease Support Group will provide information on Lyme Disease and other tick- borne disease and support group information.
n Blair Senior Services will provide information on resources for senior citizens.
n Event attendees can learn about Tai Chi, an ancient form of physical activity that offers many health benefits. Instructor Amy Williamson will provide information. A demonstration will be held at noon.
n The Pennsylvania Game Commission will provide information regarding their services.
n Veterans and their families can speak with representatives from Victory Therapeutic Horsemanship, a therapeutic service for military veterans.
n Operation Our Town will provide safety awareness information.
n Family Services will provide information on counseling, victim, youth and shelter services.
n Burgmeier’s will have a vehicle to provide free shredding of personal documents up to 25 pounds for personal identify protection.
n Blair County Dairy Princess Kara Stultz will provide children’s activities.
n Excelsior Volunteer Fire Company of Bellwood will have firemen and fire trucks on-site and will provide fire safety information.
