Birthday

Dr. Reynold “Rey” Altberg of Altoona recently celebrated his 90th birthday.

A veteran of the U.S. Navy, Rey is originally from Brooklyn, N.Y.

He moved to the area in the early 1950s after graduating from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry.

He established his practice in Tyrone and served the community for more than 40 years. His tenure included a period of time providing eye care to inmates at the Federal Correctional Institution, Loretto. He also had a part-time optometry practice in Johnstown.

After semi-retiring from the Tyrone practice, he worked as an optometrist part-time in J.C. Penney Co. in the Logan Valley Mall.

Dr. Altberg has dedicated much time and effort to community service, including serving as the president and on the board of directors of the Jewish Memorial Center and serving on the board of directors of Agudath Achim Con-gregation for several years.

He was a member of the Bell-wood Lions Club and the Tyrone Elks Club and Kiwanis Club.

He has been an avid skier and local ski club member who enjoyed skiing into his 80s at Blue Knob and other parts of the world.

Rey was born on Jan. 22, 1928, in Brooklyn, the son of the late David and Selma Altberg. He was previously married to Rose Beim-Altberg (deceased). Rey has been married to Edith (June) Diehl-Brozgal since September 2008.

His children are Marla Altberg (Philip Greiper), of New York and Merrill Altberg (Marc Rappaport) of New Jersey. He has one granddaughter.

Rey is often seen walking in the Logan Valley Mall and out and about in Altoona.
