SFU to start chapter of Sideline Cancer
LORETTO – The Colleges against Cancer (CAC) student organization at Saint Francis University recently announced a new initiative for the university, focusing more on cancer awareness and advocacy.
This new initiative is bringing a Sideline Cancer chapter to Saint Francis University, making Saint Francis the first university to have a collegiate chapter. By starting this collegiate chapter, the hope is to raise funds for members of the Saint Francis University community who might have cancer or are caring for a relative or friend who has cancer.
This new initiative will take the place of the annual Relay For Life.
Sideline Cancer was founded by the Greg and Cathy Griffith Family Foundation, which has local roots in Hollidaysburg. The foundation focuses on cancer awareness; connecting patients, families and communities; offering hope; and funding a cure.
The foundation began after Greg Griffith was diagnosed with stage IV pancreatic and liver cancer and passed away after losing his 19-month battle.
Cathy Griffith, his wife, along with their two sons, continue the foundation, awareness and advocacy.
In addition to being the first university to have a Sideline Cancer chapter, Sideline Cancer also has close roots with Saint Francis University.
Associate professor of communications, Brent Ottaway, knows the Griffith family well. In fact, as Cathy Griffith said, “Brent’s children Luke and Amanda were the spark that ignited this entire journey to Sideline Cancer! It was two young college students (Amanda and Luke Ottaway) that offered Greg hope in our darkest hour. Over the course of these past four years, it was a collaborative effort of many students that created Sideline Cancer.”
Saint Francis University’s collegiate chapter of Sideline Cancer – the first university in the country to have such – will officially kick off on Jan. 16 at the men’s and women’s basketball games.
