Altoona’s Gavin Ciampoli wins state wrestling championship; Tyrone’s Kyle Scott gets silver

Altoona Area High School junior Gavin Ciampoli became the first Mountain Lion wrestler in 52 years to win a state championship with a gold medal performance in Hershey on Saturday.

Ciampoli decisioned West Scranton senior Tommy Schechterly, 9-3, in the Class 3A 160-pound championship match at the Giant Center.

Altoona’s last state champion was Steve Maurey in 1974.

Tyrone senior Kyle Scott came up short in his quest for a gold medal and an undefeated season.

Scott battled, but lost to now four-time state champion Adam Waters of Faith Christian, 4-1, in the Class 2A 189-pound championship match.
