Three of the four Altoona wrestlers have advanced to the quarterfinals of the PIAA Class 3A Championships at Hershey’s Giant Center.
Dominic Picciotti (107), Braiden Weaver (133) and Gavin Ciampoli (160) advanced to today’s quarterfinals, set for 2:15 p.m.
Piccotti had the biggest win for the Mountain Lions, knocking off Conestoga Valley’s second-seeded Sean Morley, 9-5, in the first round. Picciotti opened with a 7-1 win over Central Bucks East’s Johnny Hunter.
Picciotti (35-11) will wrestle Council Rock South’s Quinn Bagnell (41-5) in the quarterfinals. Bagnell beat Notre Dame-Green Pond’s Maximus Quarry, 4-1, in overtime.
Weaver (36-6) followed with a nail-biter, a 1-0 win over Abington Heights’ Mason Whitney, in the first round that avenged a 7-2 loss from Mid-Winter Mayhem.

“I think wrestling him at Mid-Winter Mayhem helped me reshape and refocus and helped me re-organize my goals a little more,” Weaver told PA Power Wrestling.
“Me and my coaches developed a big game plan to help me win. He’s a big fan of this (right leg) here. I was trying to get him off this leg as much as possible.”
Ciampoli (35-6) rolled to a 17-2 technical fall in 2:53 over Quakertown’s Logan Pfister in the first round. Ciampoli will wrestle Nazareth’s Dominick Tunison in the quarterfinals. Tunison outlasted Downingtown East’s Cade McDowell, 18-13, to advance.
Altoona’s Deklan Barr injury-defaulted in 5:04 in an intense and wild preliminary bout against Boiling Springs’ Alex Mentzer. Mentzer was winning, 17-10, at the time of the default.
Barr responded with a 2-1 win over Abington Heights’ Brady Full in his first consolation bout to stay alive.

Central's Ty Matthews, top, battles with Union City's Van Ward during a flurry in their 107-pound first round bout Thursday. Matthews knocked off Ward, 4-3, to reach the quarterfinals.
Picciotti took a 4-3 lead into the second period, but Morley (40-3) reversed with 46 seconds into the period. Picciotti quickly reversed and scored two nearfall points late in the period to take an 8-5 lead.
Morley rode almost the entire third before Picciotti escaped to set the final score.
Weaver, a two-time state placewinner, rode Whitney the whole second period off a scoreless bout. Weaver escaped 21 seconds into the third and avoided any danger from there.
Weaver will face Boiling Springs’ second-seeded Drew Scherer (39-5), who rang up a 15-0 technical fall in 2:27 in the first round.
2A roundup
Central 107-pound freshman Ty Matthews had Union City’s second-ranked Van Ward wrapped up tightly from the top after a takedown with 16 seconds left gave him a 4-3 lead.
As the clock dipped below 5 seconds, he pumped his fist and pointed toward his corner on the first day of the PIAA Class 2A Championships.
Before his hand was raised, Matthews ran over to Central coach Dave Marko and gave him a high five.
“Ty had a great match,” Marko said. “I felt that he was dominant for long stretches of the match.”
Matthews was making his first appearance at Hershey’s Giant Center on the first day of the PIAA Class 2A Championships.
Matthews wasn’t intimidated the weight of the moment at all.
All he did was dominate in a 15-0 technical fall in 2:47 over North Schuylkill’s Gaige Mentusky in his preliminary round bout.
Matthews will face Bishop McDevitt’s Blake Klipp, a 3-2 winner over Benton’s Korben Collae, in the 8 a.m. quarterfinals on Friday – the longest day of the tournament. The semifinals are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday.
“As far as tomorrow, everything is tough down here,” Marko said. “Ty will need to be at his best each and every match.”
Tyrone’s Southwest Regional champion Kyle Scott advanced to the quarterfinals in dominating fashion, racking up a 19-4 technical fall over North Star’s Kasey Yoder in 2:00.
With the win, the second-seeded Scott broke the Tyrone record for career wins with 161. A.J. Schopp had held the record since winning a state title in 2010.
Scott (44-0) will wrestle Fort LeBoeuf’s Aiden Struchen in the quarterfinals. Struchen earned a 7-1 win over Biglerville’s Gavin Boyd in the first round.
Glendale’s Daniel Williams (285) went 1-1 and is still alive in the consolations.
Tyrone’s Mason VanAllman (160) and Central’s Blair Miller (285) went 0-2 and were eliminated.
Girls roundup
Bellwood-Antis’ Juliette Cuevas (100) and Northern Bedford’s Rachel Clouse (106) went 1-1 on the first day of the girls state tournament and are still eligible for medals.
Cuevas was pinned by Quakertown’s Ashley Stank in 3:41, but she rebounded with a pin of Cumberland Valley’s Ava Montes in 4:35.
Clouse dropped a 9-2 decision to South Western’s Claire Gobrecht, but she stayed alive with a 5-4 win over Parkland’s Peyton Schneck. Clouse got a takedown with 11 seconds left to secure the win.
