Kyle Scott one of 3 area No. 1 seeds as districts approach

Tyrone senior Kyle Scott will enter his final District 6 Class 2A Tournament aiming for his first tournament title as the No. 1 seed at 189 pounds.

The 35-0 Scott, a two-time District 6 runner-up, was tabbed as the top seed at 189 when the seeds were released on Tuesday night.

Two other wrestlers from the Mirror coverage areas are No. 1 seeds. Central sophomore Ty Matthews was named the top seed at 107 pounds, while Central Cambria junior Burke Niebauer is the No. 1 seed at 139.

Glendale senior Daniel Williams (38-1) is the No. 2 seed at 285 behind Bishop McCort’s returning District 6 runner-up and eventual state third-placer Caleb Rodriguez. Williams is also a two-time District 6 runner-up who missed all of last season with knee injuries.

Bellwood-Antis’ Nolan Hewitt (107) is the only other second seed.

Central’s Joel Morris (127) and Blair Miller (285) and Tyrone’s Mason VanAllman (160) are seeded third. Central’s Carsen Mowery (121) and Penn Cambria’s Nate Mack (160) are seeded fourth

Tyrone’s Tanner Walk (107), Glendale’s Ethan Gilbey (145) and Central Cambria’s Jeremy Hajzus (189) are No. 5 seeds.

Central’s Nathan Morris (114) and Kaden Horn (145), Claysburg-Kimmel Rylan Quarello (127) and Central Cambria’s Hadyn Strittmatter (133) are No. 6 seeds.

The Class 2A and 3A wrestlers aren’t sharing the Fieldhouse this season as the District 6 Class 3A Tournament is next week. The 2A wrestlers are to start at 11 a.m. on Friday for the first of two sessions the first day. The quarterfinals are set for 5 p.m.

Saturday’s wrestling is to begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday with consolation bouts. The semifinals are slated for 10:30 a.m. The championship finals, as well as the third, fifth and seventh place bouts, are to follow after the 4:30 p.m. District 6 Hall of Fame ceremony and parade of champions.

The top six wrestlers at every weight in Class 2A advance to the Southwest Regional, set for Feb. 27-28 at the Fieldhouse.

D-5 seeds set

Northern Bedford doesn’t have a top seed for Saturday’s District 5 Tournament at Bedford High School, but senior Nolin Snider is seeded second at 215 pounds.

Snider (17-4) is seeded behind Everett’s Tyson Grove (32-7).

The young Black Panthers have No. 3 seeds in freshmen Eli Dutchcot (114) and Knox Dibert (285). Freshman Weston Baker (107) and sophomore Brett Cottle (160) are No. 4 seeds.

Regionally, Chestnut Ridge has six No. 1 seeds in Kooper Deputy (107), Carter Ickes (114), state champion and three-time District 5 champ Dominic Deputy (127), Austin Bernash (133), Trenden Willey (139) and Jayden Imler (189).

Tussey Mountain’s Dakota Santamaria (121), Everett’s Canden Hillenbrand (145) and Bedford’s Cuyler Hale (160) are also top seeds.

The tournament begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The final session will start at 5 p.m. with District 5 Hall of Fame inductions and a parade of champions. The championship finals and consolation finals will follow at approximately 5:30.

The top three at every weight class advance to the Southwest Regional Tournament on Feb. 27-28 at the Altoona Fieldhouse.
