Chestnut Ridge dominates with six District 5 wrestling champions

The beat just continues to go on for Chestnut Ridge in the District 5 2A Wrestling Tournament.

Boasting six individual champions, Ridge won its 15th consecutive team title in the event on Saturday at Bedford Area High School, racking up 204 team points. Meyersdale was a distant second in the team standings with 118 points.

Ridge senior Dominic Deputy, the 2025 PIAA Class 2A state champion at 121 pounds, won his fourth district title Saturday by capturing the championship at 127 pounds in stellar fashion. Deputy (now 45-2 this season with 32 falls), pinned his way through the tournament, registering three falls in a combined total of just 90 seconds — including a 30-second win by fall over Conemaugh Township’s Carter Smith in the championship bout.

Other Ridge champions included Deputy’s younger brother Kooper (107 pounds), along with Carter Ickes (114), Austin Bernash (133), Trenden Willey (139), and Jayden Imler (189). Along with the champs, Ridge’s Garrett Weyandt, who took second place at 121, and Colby Kaufman (145) and Tristan Carey (172), both of whom took third places, will advance to the PIAA Class 2A Southwest Regional Tournament to be held Feb. 27-28 at the Altoona Area High School Fieldhouse.

Northern Bedford will be sending three to regionals, all as third-place finishers in the District 5 tournament.

Regional qualifiers for the Black Panthers are sophomore Brett Cottle (160 pounds), senior Nolin Snider (215), and freshman Knox Dibert (285).

All in all, Northern Bedford coach Brian Dutchcot was happy with his team’s overall performance, as the Black Panthers also placed three more wrestlers in third-place matches who fell just one win short of earning a regional berth.

“Overall, we wrestled well,” Dutchcot said. “We had three guys qualify for the regional tournament and we had six guys total who had a shot, with three guys placing fourth. I’m very pleased with the overall performance of our wrestlers.”

Northern Bedford’s regional qualifiers showed plenty of moxie by all bouncing back from losses in the semifinals to wrestle back for third place.

Cottle, seeded fourth at his weight class entering the tournament, rebounded from his semifinal loss by logging a 3-1 decision over Ridge’s Jonmark Harbaugh in the consy semis, then winning his third-place match decisively, by 9-0 major decision over Conemaugh Township’s Nathan Dail — who had defeated Cottle early in the regular season.

“Brett was injured a little bit this year, but it was nice to see him wrestle really well and come back for third place,” Dutchcot said. “That kid (Dail) had beaten Brett earlier in the season, but it was great to see Brett put it together at the district tournament and earn the right to represent our school at the regional tournament.

“Brett has really improved throughout the season,” Dutchcot said.

Dibert, just a freshman, was also seeded fourth at 285, and bounced back from a tough 12-8 semifinal loss to archrival Gianni Browne of Meyersdale to win his next two matches. Dibert beat Ridge’s Owen Miller, 7-0 in the consy semis and earned his regional berth by pinning Bedford’s Nathan Gardner in 4:40 in the third-place bout.

“There were a lot of upperclassmen in Knox’s weight class, and Knox is a ninth grader who is doing a nice job,” Dutchcot said. “He wrestled real well in the semis but came up a little short, then bounced back nicely to take third.”

Snider finished second in the District 5 tournament at 215 pounds last season, and was seeded second in that weight class this year, but he suffered a tough 8-6 loss to eventual district champion Caleb Snyder of Meyersdale in the semifinals.

Nolin Snider bounced back with a vengeance after that setback, scoring a 16-3 major decision over Somerset’s Chase Elchin in the consolation semis and securing third place and his regional berth by pinning Ridge’s Jesse Calhoun in 1:40.

“Nolin Snider was a trying to win a district title as a senior,” Dutchcot said. “He had a tough loss in a close match in the semifinals, and came back strong to finish third.”

Tussey Mountain’s Dakota Santamaria won the 121-pound District 5 championship, and will be joined at the regional by Bedford runners-up Carter Kozielec (139) and Cuyler Hale (160), along with Bedford third-placer Tyler Barton (152).

Everett will be sending four to the regional — district runners-up Tucker Smith (114), Canden Hillenbrand (145), and Tyson Grove (215), along with third-placer Liam Berry (133).
