BELLWOOD — Thursday evening’s dual meet was an important milestone in the rebuilding of a program for Bellwood-Antis wrestling.
After going winless the last three seasons, the Blue Devils had already snapped a streak of 59 dual-meet losses in a row with a win over United earlier this season. But Bellwood fans will remember this season for Thursday in wrestling’s version of the Backyard Brawl, which turned out to be a 37-36 victory over Tyrone.
The Blue Devils won the match on criteria D with the most bouts won (7-6).
The first three criterias determine team points and match points penalized by both wrestlers and coaches, which none applied for either side.
“We thought we had a chance tonight, and the kids that needed to win got some bonus points for us and came through,” Bellwood-Antis coach Josh Hewitt said.

The Blue Devils won the dual meet despite giving up three forfeits to the Golden Eagles. Bellwood needed four pins, a technical fall, a major decision and a decision to get the victory.
Giving up four falls were the back-breaker for Tyrone.
“There were a lot of bad matchups,” Tyrone coach Quentin Wright said. “Some kids couldn’t wrestle due to injury, and things like that happen. Even though you have a full lineup, if you have kids that get pinned, it doesn’t matter.”
Bellwood led 36-12 with four bouts left, and the Eagles picked up forfeits from Mason VanAllman (172) and Kyler Suhoney (189). Kyle Scott recorded an 18-second fall on Bellwood’s Landon Sneath at 215 to set up the final bout at heavyweight.
With both Tyrone’s John Eaken and Bellwood’s Cayden Grager setting up for a throw, it was Eaken that got the best of Grager with a bear hug to Grager’s back. Eaken got the fall at 1:19 to finish the dual meet with a tie at 36.
At 107 to start the dual, Bellwood’s Nolan Hewitt needed just a first-period takedown to pick up a 3-2 decision on Tyrone’s Tanner Walk. Walk picked up a reversal with 15 seconds left, but didn’t have enough time to get a turn for back points.
Bryson Guyer needed just 2:40 to pick up a 16-0 technical fall of the Eagles’ Brooklyn Veloz at 114, while the Blue Devils’ Tanner McElravey got a fall in 3:21 to give Bellwood a 14-0 lead.
Tyrone got on the board with a Cohen Gwinn forfeit at 127 before Karter McCloskey earned a fall in 5:08 at 133 over Tyrone’s Brayden Sain.
Bellwood’s Sean McFarland earned an 11-1 major decision over Tyrone’s Coltyn Frye at 139, but Tyrone got its first win on the mat at 145 when Rhys Rawlings pinned Gabe Alley in 1:22.
The Blue Devils’ Mason Nagle and Chase Focht both got pins at 152 and 160 to set up the ending.
“Hopefully there were a good amount of students in attendance tonight, and hopefully that can get some more interest and get more kids in the room,” Coach Hewitt said.
Both teams are back on the mat on Tuesday. The Blue Devils will host Penn Cambria, while Tyrone visits Hollidaysburg.
Notes: Bellwood-Antis senior Juliette Cuevas, who earned a seventh-place finish at the first-ever girls PIAA Wrestling Tournament two years ago, was one of the officials for the junior high match. … Tyrone completed its third dual meet in three days, and its ninth this week. The Eagles wrestled six dual meets at the Mountaineer Duals at Philipsburg-Osceola last weekend before competing against Central and West Branch on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
