Central volleyball team knocked out in quarters

DERRY — The Central High School boys volleyball team made it to the quarterfinals of the Derry Area Boys Volleyball Tournament on Saturday before falling to gold pool No. 1 seed Armstrong, 27-25, in area scholastic action.

In pool play, Central lost 15-9, 16-14 to Armstrong. In bronze pool play, Sacred Heart defeated Central, 25-14, 25-21 but came back to beat Altoona, 25-19, 27-25, then split with Forest Hills, 25-13, 23-25.

In the silver pool, Central beat Deer Lakes 25-20 to advance to the game in which it lost to Armstrong.

Christian Heuston led Central with 28 kills while Blake Reynolds added 20 kills. Lincoln Mauk contributed eight blocks to go with five from Colby Gojmerac. Mauk also had 15 service points to go with 11 each from Heuston and Gojmerac. Reynolds had 20 service points to go with 16 from Landon Rhoades and 11 from Dylan Hoover.

For Altoona, opened pool play with a split against Norwin (14-16, 15-11) and a loss to Deer Lakes (15-11, 17-16). In the third-place pool, Altoona beat Forest Hills (25-8, 25-8) while splitting with Sacred Heart (25-23, 23-25).

In the first round of the playoffs, Penn-Trafford downed Altoona, 25-23.

The Mountain Lions were led by Caleb Terza with 27 service points and 25 kills, Max Coon with 37 assists and 23 service points, Parker Huey-Kish with 19 digs and 13 service points, Colson Greenleaf’s 28 digs and 25 digs from Logan Coldwell. Julian Trimmer added 10 service points.
