NBC will send three to states

D5 track and field

LOYSBURG — Northern Bedford’s senior star shot put thrower Bella Gable won her second consecutive District 5 Class 2A championship in that event Wednesday evening, but she maintains that she still has some unfinished business which she needs to address.

In her first appearance at the PIAA Class 2A state track and field meet last May, Gable finished in ninth place in the shot, just one step short of achieving a placewinner’s medal.

She said that she also has her eye set on the girls school record of 37 feet, 11 inches in the shot put event, and mentioned that she needs six more inches on her previous personal-best throw in next weekend’s state meet at Shippensburg’s Seth Grove Stadium in order to achieve that.

Gable won the shot put in Wednesday’s District 5 championship meet at Northern Bedford’s Panther Community Stadium, carding a throw of 36 feet even. She’ll be joined at the state meet next week by two of her Northern Bedford girls teammates — senior Halle Baker, who won the district triple jump title with an effort of 32 feet, 8¼ inches, and junior Amberly Detterline, who captured the district javelin championship with a throw of 115 feet, 10 inches.

“I am pleased,” Gable said after Wednesday’s championship effort. “I defended my title but I didn’t get what I really wanted, which is the girls school (shot put) record. I guess I’ll have to do that at the state meet.”

Along with picking up a placewinner’s medal for finishing eighth or better in the shot at states.

“I finished ninth last year, and got knocked off the (medals) podium,” Gable said. “I would have preferred achieving a better seeding for this year’s state meet, but I’ll be fine.”

Third-year Northern Bedford girls track and field coach Marcus Yeatts thinks so too.

“Bella has been the best thrower in the district and among the top in this area in the shot put over the last two years,” Yeatts said. “She’s been dominant.”

Baker has enjoyed an outstanding senior season that she hopes will culminate with her winning a state medal in the triple jump next Friday and Saturday as well.

“Halle has been great at the triple jump all year,” Yeatts said.

Even so, like Gable, Baker felt that her championship effort in the triple jump Wednesday left something to be desired.

“I honestly had a rough day today,” Baker said. “My personal record has been a jump of 33 feet, 10 inches, and my goal today was to beat that. That will be my goal at states.”

As well as getting on the medals podium.

“It feels great,” Baker said of punching her ticket to Shippensburg. “I have worked hard all four years to get there, and it feels really good.”

Detterline didn’t begin throwing the javelin until last season, but she has become a natural. Seeded fourth in the event at the district meet, Detterline made plenty of people sit up and take notice by winning the gold medal.

“I was a little nervous coming in, but I was excited as well, and that helped me to overcome my nerves,” Detterline said. “(As the underdog), my coach told me that I was in the best place that I could be going into this event.

“I had three PRs today, and I’m excited to go to the state meet next week for the first time and continue to grow,” Detterline added.

Yeatts said that Detterline, who also participates in jumping events, has made tremendous progress in the javelin.

“It’s an event that we thought that she could succeed at, even though she didn’t start throwing the javelin until midway through last season,” Yeatts said. “Since that time, she has continued to get better and better at it.”

May sparks Bedford girls

Led by junior distance standout Chloe May, the Bedford girls program breezed to its sixth consecutive District 5 team title.

May has now achieved the distinction of becoming a three-time District 5 girls individual champion in both the 1600 and 3200 runs. May won the 1600 run Wednesday in a time of 5:29, and the 3200 run in a time of 11:26.15.

“I’d like to have run faster, but it feels pretty good to keep the streak going,” May said.

May took sixth place at states in the 3200 as a freshman, and did not medal at Shippensburg in either event last season, but said that has motivated her for next weekend.

“I just want to get it (a state medal) again,” May said.

The Bedford girls won the team title with 154 points, while Conemaugh Township was a distant second with 96.

Other individual district champions for the Bedford girls included junior Grace Brallier, who carded a time of 1:01.67 in winning the 400 dash, sophomore Keira Koontz, who won the 100 hurdles in 16.67, and sophomore Alyssa Leydig, who won the 100 dash in 13.96.

The Bedford girls team comprised of Koontz, senior Katie McDevitt, Brallier and junior Eden Locke also won the 400 relay with a time of 52.29, and Bedford’s 1600 relay team of Brallier, Koontz, Kacey Martz and McDevitt won that event with a time of 4:14.11.

Although rain, thunder and inclement weather forced a 90-minute delay during the middle of the meet, prompting both the boys high jump and pole vault events to be postponed until Friday, the Bedford boys were crowned district team champions again with 136 ½ points, far ahead of second-place Conemuagh Township’s 72.

Individual champions for the Bedford boys were John Ingraham, who threw the discus 131 feet, nine inches; Sam Koontz, who ran the 400 dash in 50.60; Jack Tew, who threw the shot put 49 feet, 11 and ¼ inches; Andrew Evans, who threw the javelin 145 feet, four inches; and Owen Schrock, who won the long jump with effort of 20 feet, two inches.

Bedford also won the boys 400 relay with a time of 44.65 that was turned in by the team of Ethan Yocum, Bennett Steele, Grey Livengood, and Tristan Barnes.

Ridge’s Wharton wins two

Chestnut Ridge standout senior sprinter Carter Wharton won two individual events, capturing the 100 dash in 11.42 and the 200 dash in 22.24.

“The wind (negatively) affected my time today,” said Wharton. “This is the first time all season that I ran the 100 in over 11 seconds. Now that I’m going to states in two events, it’s my goal to place among the top five in both of them.”

The Everett boys 1600 relay team of Brian Poteat, Nolan Bell, Brody Gelvin and Adrick Schriber won that event with a time of 3:28.84, while in girls competition, Everett freshman Emma Ritchey won the long jump with an effort of 15 feet, seven inches.

Outside the Mirror coverage region, Meyersdale’s Branson Hersch (110 and 300 hurdles), and Conemaugh Township’s Hudson Lease (1600 and 3200 runs) were both double-winners in the boys competition.
