Cherry, Emigh leap their way to victories at LHAC track and field meet

High school track and field: LHAC championships

LORETTO — It was a good day to be in the triple-jump pit for local competitors at the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference track and field championships at Saint Francis University’s DeGol Field on Tuesday.

Bellwood-Antis sophomore Ella Cherry and Tyrone senior Mason Emigh jumped distances that ranked them in the top three in the state while capturing LHAC titles.

Cherry could only laugh and say she didn’t really know how she jumped 39 feet and a quarter inch, saying it was a number she didn’t expect to reach this season. It currently stands as the second-longest distance in Pennsylvania among girls in the event.

“No, I felt very, very accomplished,” Cherry said. “I just did what I usually do, but I think I stuck my heels out longer.”

Cherry had a successful freshman year but is hoping her sophomore year brings more success at the District 6 and PIAA meet.

“It gives me a lot of hope,” Cherry said. “I have to continue to focus on what I am doing and continue to do what I am doing.”

Emigh’s jump of 46 feet, 10.25 inches was enough to edge Hollidaysburg’s Cole DeLattre and Penn Cambria’s Blake Lilly, who both turned in solid jumps.

“The first couple jumps went a little bad for me, and then I picked it up at the end,” Emigh said. “I kept getting too high, and then I’d fall down too fast in the pit. I stretched it out and was able to jump a longer distance.”

Emigh also had a personal best in the long jump of 22 feet, 7.5 inches for a third-place finish.

“It gives me great hope,” Emigh said. “It’s my goal to try and win districts (in the triple jump). I’ll have some good

competition that can jump a 46-5, so hopefully I can do that. I need to work on my second phase and get that down. If I can get that down, I should be good.”

Emigh’s teammate on the girls side, Tyrone senior Claire Lehman, continued a season-long domination of the 300-meter hurdles and local big events by winning in 45.41 seconds.

“Knowing this is my last year after seeing how close I was as a junior, I knew this year could be my year to do it,” Lehman said. “I’m hoping to get first at districts, and hoping to make the finals at the state meet. My goal is in the low 45s or high 44s.”

Lehman is also part of Tyrone’s LHAC champion 400 relay team but always gives it her all for the relays even with how grueling the 300 hurdles can be to run.

“Knowing I am part of a relay team, I have to be there for my team,” Lehman said. “I take as much time as I can in between so I can give it my all for the relays.”

Tyrone also got a winner in the girls high jump as Lola Woomer cleared 5 feet, 2 inches to take that title.

One of Cherry’s teammates, Emma Taneyhill, won the discus with a throw of 134 feet, 8 inches.

Two Penn Cambria athletes — sprinter Kate Eckenrode and Lilly in the javelin — won LHAC championships.

Eckenrode won the 100 dash by one-hundredth of a second over Cherry with a time of 12.39.

Lilly won the javelin with a throw of 160 feet, 3 inches.

“It’s been a little different. We lost a lot of seniors who made this fun,” Lilly said. “But I’m still getting through it and trying to do the best I can. I have had a few injuries, but I’m doing pretty good for myself. This meet was good in triple jump, long jump and javelin. It’s a great time for me to finally start showing out.”

Ethan Haycisak helped the Central Cambria boys win the 3200 relay in 8:23.13 to start off the day and then won the 1600 run in a personal-best time of 4:26.97.

“The mile was really good, because I felt awful beforehand,” Haycisak said. “I was really surprised I had as much left at the end to be able to close as well as I did at the end. The LHAC meet is never really my meet, especially with the 3200 relay right before it.”

Haycisak finished second in the 3200 to a rested Rueben Manfred of Hollidaysburg, who won in 9:38.77.

“It was tough, because it was run in an odd way where we started out slower and then sped up,” Manfred said. “That’s not really my style usually, but it worked today. I have to give it to those guys, because a couple of them were in the mile and the two-mile. I just did the two-mile run.”

Another long distance running boys runner who claimed a title was Central’s Jacob Heuston in the 800 in 2:01.01.

“It’s been going well,” Heuston said. “I put in a lot of work going into the season. It feels great to be a champion. It all came together, and it feels great.”

Teammate Ben Hartman was third in 2:04.84.

“It’s wonderful, because we push each other every day,” Heuston said. “I wouldn’t be anywhere today without him.”

Fellow Central runner Lanee Berkhimer dominated the 3200 run with a LHAC championship in 10:56.94.

Hollidaysburg experienced plenty of success at Tuesday’s meet.

The Hollidaysburg boys won both the 400 and 1600 boys relays, and Devin Walters won the 200 in 22.27 and let out a scream and pumped his fists after crossing the finish line.

“There were four re-starts, and that’s kind of stressful,” Walters said. “I came out of the blocks excellently and finished well. I’m pretty pumped about this season so far. I have been able to break records left and right.”

The Lady Tigers got a win from Brooklyn Boggetta in the 100 hurdles in 15.7 seconds and another from Jaclyn Sahlaney, who won the 200 in 25.33 seconds.

“I was very excited, because coming in I wanted to have a good race with a good start,” Sahlaney said. “Coming around the turn, I just wanted to keep up my speed and finish off my race strong, and I did that. I was very pleased.”

Sahlaney, just a freshman, is focusing on lowering times as the season wraps up.

“Every race I go into with an open mind and focus only on myself,” Sahlaney said. “I want to improve my times each week and run in the low 25s and put my best effort in and leave it all on the track.”

The Bellwood-Antis girls and the Hollidaysburg boys won the LHAC team championships after each team prevailed in a series of dual meet tiebreakers based on Tuesday’s meet between only the top regular-season teams in the conference.
