Lady Tigers swimmers get five to states on opening day

UNIVERSITY PARK — The Hollidaysburg girls swim team got five girls into states on Friday at the District 6 Class 2A Swimming and Diving Championships held at Penn State University.
Addison Smith won the 200 freestyle in 2:09.62, and then teamed up with Jackie Bevan, Margaret Bandstra and Kiri Dougherty to take first in the 200 medley relay in 1:54.57. Bevan, Bandstra, Dougherty and Madalyn Brick joined together to take the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.96.
On her own, Bandstra finished second in the 200 IM (2:16.39) while Brick was fifth in the 200 free (2:13.29). Dougherty took fourth in the 50 free (27.41) while teammate Kara Neeley was fifth (28.91). Smith was third in the100 butterfly (1:03.85).
For the Tiger boys in 3A, the 200 medley relay team of Charlie Pollock, Kaleb Swalga, Kaden Henderson and Caleb Myers was second (1:43.24) while Henderson finished second in the 100 butterfly (51.80).
Pollock, Myers, Swalga and Henderson were second in the 200 free relay (1:33.72). Pollock took third in the 50 freestyle (23.87) while Swalga was fifth (24.25).
The Altoona girls had several third-place finishes in 3A, including the 200 freestyle relay team of Addison Fox, Abigail Chverchko, Sofia Hallinan and Vida Blanco-Peterman (1:58.76). The 200 medley relay team of Lana Luke, Addison Mitchell, Ella Heverly and Gracie Price was third (2:02.02), while Price placed fifth in the 50 freestyle (26.56). Heverly finished fourth in the 100 butterfly (1:07.31).
The Central Cambria boys and girls swim teams had a stellar first day at the District 6 Class 2A meet.
The boys 200 medley relay team picked up a silver medal, thanks to the performances of Ethan Haycisak, Angelo Persio, Giles Westrick and Thomas Corcoran.
On their own, Corcoran took fourth in the 50 freestyle while Haycisak was fifth in the 200 IM and Westrick was fifth in the 100 butterfly.
On the girls side, the 200 freestyle relay team of Karlee Nileski, Kendall Magulick, Bryn Wandel and Jayce Kleinstuber got a bronze medal with a third-place finish.
On their own, Kleinstuber was third in the 200 freestyle while Magulick placed fourth in the 200 free.
For Tyrone, its top performer was Patrick Van Kleunen in the 200 IM, where he won the silver with a time of 2:09.73, less than two seconds behind first-place winner Nate Heller of Huntingdon. Golden Eagle teammate Owen Dunklebarger was third in the 100 butterfly with a time of 56.92. Matthew Eckenrode placed third for Tyrone in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:54:05.
Cambria Heights’ Rocco Ricupero placed fifth in the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.92.
After one day, the 3A boys team leader is State College (250) with Hollidaysburg second (94), Central Mountain third (126) and Altoona fourth (36). The Lady Tigers are first in the 2A girls standings (151.5) while Central Cambria is fourth (72), Cambria Heights 10th (30) and Tyrone 12th (14).
The 2A boys standings has Richland first (86.5) with Tyrone second at 84 points. Central Cambria is fourth (72) while Cambria Heights is 11th (11). The 3A girls team standings has State College first (245) followed by Central Mountain (111) and Altoona (77).
