HOLLIDAYSBURG — Nobody had a better day at the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference swim meet than Hollidaysburg junior Addison Smith — and that must mean she was having fun.
“Over the past year, I learned that I need to have fun,” Smith said. “If I don’t have fun, I do terrible. So, my goal is just to swim fast and have fun.”
Smith won her four regular events, the 100- and 200-yard freestyle events and the 200 and 400 freestyle relays (setting a meet record in each relay), before she teamed with Kaden Henderson, Charlie Pollock and Margaret Bandstra to win the annual LHAC mixed 400 relay 4X100IM in a meet record time of 4:06.2 to close out the night.
“We have a really good group of girls training with us,” Smith said. “Margaret, Jackie (Bevan), Kiri (Dougherty) — it’s just so nice to show up every day and train with those girls and our coaches. They push you every day.”
Bevan, Maya Grinberg, Smith and Dougherty won the 200 girls freestyle relay in 1:48.66, and Bevan, Kara Neeley, Smith and Bandstra won the 400 free relay in 3:56.75.

Smith started the meet with a win in the 200 freestyle in 2:03.52, which was close to her personal best in the event.
“Last swim season, I wasn’t where I wanted to be,” Smith said. “Having a good cross country season gave me a good start and momentum into this season.”
In her final individual event, Smith did set her personal best with a time of 56.55 seconds in the 100 freestyle.
“We don’t normally rest as much before this meet as we did,” Smith said. “But, we rested, and I went into this very confidently. I had a really good start, just put my head down and had a good race.”
In addition to his win in the mixed relay, Henderson also won two individual events.

He opened his meet with a win in the 100 butterfly in 52.95 seconds despite suffering an injury in Monday’s meet against Clearfield.
“I did something to my shoulder on Monday, so I’m just trying to swim without being in pain,” Henderson said. “The bigger goal is for July and trying to make (USA Simming’s) Futures, if not that, definitely Nationals.”
Henderson said he took it easy the last three days but was never going to miss Friday’s event.
“Wednesday, I went pretty hard,” Henderson said. “I took a day off. It really just goes numb, and that’s the way it goes. At districts, I want to go to states in both events. Mostly, I want to support the team. I’m the team’s captain, and I want to be there for them.”
Later in the meet, the shoulder held up in his victory in the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.39.
“I feel confident,” Henderson said. “Winning LHACs is definitely a good start, but it changes every meet.”
Hollidaysburg’s Charlie Pollock was the only other local individual winner — taking the LHAC title in the boys 50 freestyle in 23.11 seconds.
“You have to get a good start,” Pollock said. “You have to swing your arms as fast as you can, and you have to have a good finish. Because a good finish can knock a whole second off your time.”
Pollock said the event takes a lot out of him, but he’s proud of what he’s accomplished in a short time with organized swimming.
“I am excited, because I have really only been swimming for two years,” Pollock said. “It’s great to get first.”
Bandstra would have set the meet record in the girls 200 IM with her time of 2:19.56, but she finished as the runner-up to new meet-record-holder Mila Klena of Penns Valley, who won the event in 2:16.48. Bandstra was also the runner-up in the 100 breaststroke by a narrow margin to Klena (1:07.38-1:07.91).
On the boys side, Tyrone’s Matthew Eckenrode finished third in the 500 freestyle but also broke what was the previous meet record with a time of 5:16.57. Remarkably, both champion Cullen Miller (4:59.93) of Westmont Hilltop and runner-up Jack Wolfe (5:06.41) of Penns Valley also broke the previous record on Friday.
Central Cambria’s Tommy Corcoran was tied for the lead after one lap and finished just behind champion Elijah Mercier of Bald Eagle Area (59.69-59.86) as the runner-up in the boys 100 backstroke.
The District 6 championships will be held a little more than a month from now at the PSU Natatorium on Feb. 20-21.
