The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association announced seven sites for fall state championship sites for the next four years — 2026-2027 through 2029-2030.

One of the changes brings the PIAA girls volleyball championships to Loretto’s Saint Francis University. Those championships were previously contested at Cumberland Valley High School.

Cumberland Valley will continue to host the PIAA football championships in Mechanicsburg as well as the field hockey championships.

The boys and girls golf championships will also remain local at the Penn State Golf Course in State College.

The girls tennis team, singles and doubles championships will remain at Hershey Racquet Club.

Two other sports will have new championship locations — soccer and cross country.

Soccer will be played at Highmark Stadium in Pittsburgh, and cross country is moving from Hershey to Newville’s Big Spring School District.

Sauerwein dies

Robert Sauerwein, who handled several tournaments for District 6 including softball and soccer, died Jan. 6 at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center.

He was 51.

“Robert was a tremendous help to our District 6 Committee and loved supporting our schools and student-athletes,” District 6 chairman Ralph Cecere posted on the district’s website. “Please keep Robert and his family in your prayers. May he rest in peace.”

Sauerwein also served as the head girls basketball coach at Philipsburg-Osceola.

He graduated from Penns Valley High School in 1993.

A memorial service to celebrate Sauerwein’s life will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m., at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in Centre Hall with Rev. Rebecca Horn officiating. He will be laid to rest immediately following the service at the Reformed & Lutheran Cemetery.

Landis out

Former Somerset head football coach Bob Landis has been removed from his position as North Star head football coach following a 7-1 vote by the school’s board on Tuesday.

Landis had coached at North Star for the past six years.

According to a report by WTAJ, a petition calling for his removal was created and supported by 21 out of 32 players.

The Cougars went 7-4 in 2023 — their best season under Landis — but fell to 6-5 last season and went 4-6 in 2025. North Star plays in the Inter-County Conference and in District 5 Class 2A.

Starting at $2.99/week.
