Highlanders pull out shootout win, advance

PHILIPSBURG — After the Cambria Heights boys soccer team chanted “we’re going to the ship,” as in “we’re going to the championship,” the Highlanders hoisted goalkeeper Caleb Patterson in the air in celebration. The senior deserved the attention after the District 6 Class 2A semifinal. Patterson made 13 saves and scored a goal in the shootout period as the third-seeded Highlanders knocked off second-seeded Penns Valley, 2-1 (4-2 in the shootout) on Monday at Philipsburg-Osceola’s Mountaineer Stadium. “It feels amazing,” Patterson said. “Our coach informed us ...

Devils fail to keep lead

EBENSBURG — Monday night during the District 6 Class 2A boys soccer semifinals, Central Cambria learned just how cruel soccer can be. One moment you have the lead, a breakaway opportunity later on doesn’t get put away to seal the win. Then before you know it, you allow a goal late in regulation and ultimately are put away in overtime. The Red Devils let their lead slip away late, and in the end, fell once again to Juniata. This year they lost, 2-1, in overtime at the Red Devilplex. “We left some stuff on the table in the first half, but we came out focused in the second half, ...

Lady Panthers miss out on chances, watch big season end

Unfortunately for the Lady Panthers, it was the Lady Rockets who made the most of their shots on goal. NBC got down at the half, and despite numerous prime goal-scoring chances, it came up empty on every single one as the second-seed bowed out of the District 5 Class 1A playoffs with a 5-0 loss to Rockwood ...

By Brad Rosemas For the Mirror JOHNSTOWN — Bishop Carroll was again involved in a tight contest for the second straight game, truly experiencing a playoff atmosphere. The No. 6 seed Huskies used a late tally to grab a one-goal win over Forest Hills during the District 6 Class A quarters on Tuesday. In Thursday’s semifinals, Bishop Carroll saw a similar situation, but was unfortunately on the opposite end. With 4:50 remaining in the game, United forward Dylan Dishong scored his second of two goals, breaking a three-all tie and giving the No. 2 seed Lions an eventual 4-3 ...
