Many had thought Altoona was going to be hosting a playoff football game this week, but it had became official on Sunday that the Mountain Lions were actually traveling to McDowell instead of the game being played at Mansion Park.
McDowell had wins against three out-of-state opponents that were unaccounted for in power points in Chardon, Garfield Heights and Boardman -- all out of Ohio.
At the end of Friday evening's games, the District 6 website showed that Altoona had finished in second place in the 6A standings. The Trojans, which finished 7-3, actually had 860 points, which was 110 points more than Altoona. The Mountain Lions finished the season at 6-4.
"It was an honest mistake in calculation of points," Altoona coach Vince Nedimyer Jr. said. "We try to worry about what we could have done to make it different. We had an opportunity to host a playoff game, and our kids were pretty charged up about it, but they've done a good job of overcoming adversity."
The Mountain Lions have the No. 3 seed and will travel to Erie to face No. 2 McDowell at 7 p.m. Friday. State College holds the top seed and will entertain No. 4 Erie.
In Class 5A, Hollidaysburg will host DuBois in a District 2-6-9 subregional. The winner will play a District 2 game on the road against the winner of Pittston Area and Abington Heights.
Central overtook the No. 1 spot in the 3A standings on Friday night over Cambria Heights, and will face fourth-seeded Philipsburg-Osceola in Roaring Spring in the semifinals. The Highlanders will entertain No. 3 Central Cambria in the other semifinal.
In the eight-team field in Class 2A, Bellwood-Antis earned the third seed and will host sixth-seeded Bald Eagle Area in the quarterfinals. In the other quarterfinals, top-seeded Mount Union will host No. 8 Penns Valley, No. 4 River Valley hosts No. 5 Marion Center, and second-seeded Richland is home with No. 7 Southern Huntingdon.
Bishop Guilfoyle is the top seed in 1A, and will host No. 8 Northern Cambria. Fifth-seeded Juniata Valley and No. 6 Glendale will both be on the road. The Hornets will travel to No. 4 Moshannon Valley, and the Vikings will be at Point Stadium in Johnstown against Bishop McCort. Also in Class A, No. 7 West Branch travels to No. 2 Homer-Center.
All of this week's games are at 7 p.m. Friday night.
