PC runs away from Ridge

NEW PARIS -- The Penn Cambria Panthers took a 39-0 lead in the first half and never looked back to take down the Chestnut Ridge Lions, 53-21, at Dr. Giovacchini Stadium.

From the start, the Panthers had complete control of this game. Their offense was too much for the Lions to handle, but it wasn't just one player either. Out of the seven touchdowns they scored, six different players were responsible for them. They fired on all cylinders, something that they've been trying for weeks to get going.

"We had our best practice week from Monday down through Thursday and we were locked in," Penn Cambria coach Jason Grassi stated. "That's how we play. That's what we were trying to get at for the last seven weeks. I was just proud of our guys for how they came out and executed."

In the first quarter, the Panthers jumped on the board first with a touchdown from Evan Latterner to Trentyn Hassenplug. Quickly after, Ian Beck doubled their lead from three yards out.

Chestnut Ridge attempted a fake punt, but it failed and from there, the Panthers took complete control. Corbin Vinglish scored a 1-yard touchdown and then Penn Cambria forced a fumble on the following kickoff. That allowed Latterner to find Noah Jones for a 10-yard touchdown.

Then on the first play of the next drive, Chestnut Ridge fumbled the pitch attempt and Vinglish took the fumble recovery to the end zone, making it 39-0.

The Lions would got a 43 yard touchdown run before the half from Garrett Weyandt, but that was a very deep hole to climb out of.

From there, the two teams exchanged scores. Beck scored his second of the night and then Weyandt responded with his second. Then Jamie Maybush found the end zone before the Lions concluded the scoring with a 9-yard score from Dexter Ward.

Play of the game: Nate Mack's big hit and forced fumble on the kickoff following Vinglish's rushing touchdown swung all the momentum towards the Panthers.

Most vital statistics: Penn Cambria accounted for nearly 500 offensive yards, six offensive touchdowns, and 24 first downs.

Latterner on what went right: "The line. Everybody did their assignments. Receivers blocked well and everyone all worked together."

Chestnut Ridge coach Max Shoemaker: "We can't give them easy scores. The biggest thing is we got to learn to be consistent. We have to do a better job defensively and that carries over offensively, too."

Notable: This is the first time since Week 4 that Penn Cambria had senior quarterback Latterner on the field. In his first game back, he threw for 105 yards with two touchdowns and ran for 82.

"We got Evan back," Grassi said. "He's a dual threat guy and he does a really great job for us back there. He brings a little bit of a different dimension. He's played all year and I'm just proud of his efforts for leading the offense and doing what he needed to do today."

Records: Penn Cambria (5-2), Chestnut Ridge (2-5)

Next week: Penn Cambria heads to Tyrone. Chestnut Ridge travels to Bellwood-
